Kenkey & Fish-A befitting lunch for connect @6

Still on Connect’s sixth birthday. The ambience on connect these days has been rather nice. We appreciate all the meet-ups and nice post to celebrate connect.

I have been in Ghana in the last 2 weeks and am enjoying my trip. It’s both official and otherwise. Today I thought I would celebrate connect in the African/Ghana way seeing we are still in July. I decided to have a Ghanaian lunch of Kenkey and fish. Kenkey is the staple food here in Ghana and mostly in the capital Accra. Its the easiest and cheapest meal you can get. With about $1 dollar you can afford a decent lunch of Kenkey fish and a little tomato sauce alongside. It’s a little bit more complex to make at home, but easier to eat out when it comes to Kenkey and fish. It’s a dish worth trying out whenever you visit Ghana.

This one was homemade by my aunty though I had no hand in it. I just thought I should share it with you all on connect.

Fun fact about Kenkey and Fish

  • it has nice sour taste which could be sharp atimes
  • It’s sticky and eaten with the fingers
  • It has a dull white colour which is quite appealing
  • It’s made out of corn and preparation is cumbersome and long
  • The fish is deep fried in oil and is quite crispy and crunchy
  • It’s accompanied with fried tomatoes sauce, salade and sardine (Not always)
  • It’s very filling and satisfying
  • It’s a dish that is particular to Ghana/West Africa.

Hope you like it and hope you will be happy to try it on your next visit to Ghana.

Cheers

You remind me of the day I eat this food at University Of Ghana

I had no orientation of the sharp sour taste, but the fish was irresistible

Hello @Kwiksatik

Wow. Such a delicacy for that price. Although i am not in Ghana but i guess i could get this some where in Lagos. Perhaps around the Ghana High Commission in Lagos Island. I would love to have a taste.

@SholaIB is Kenkey eaten as whole meal or as brunch?

Hello @MrFreez

Baba, a pleasant surprise to have your comment and thank you kindly. I have gotten Kenkey somewhere in Ikeja once at evening time. I am not too sure about the Ghana High commission area its in Ikeja GRA you know that. Therefore it might be dicy. If you ask the Ghanaians in the high commission there they might direct you where to get it in Lagos.

It’s a proper whole meal here in Accra. Its worth having a taste I tell you. I enjoy it so much. If you like spices have it with Shitto,it’s so tasty. It’s the staple food here on Ghana like I said in the post. Ésé adupé !
