Karupatti has been a replacement for jaggery. Though jaggery has lot of iron contents, Karupatti offers more nutritious value. Made out of sapling which oozes from earthen pots, the unfermented juice is boiled and using coconut shells it is moulded as Karupatti. The liquid looks dark brown in color. Over the years Karupatti turned as a replacement for white sugar, due to its natural minerals and lack of preservatives. Karupatti was first produced at Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari.

Yesterday I visited a shop named Kadambur Karupatti coffee in Mylapore-Chennai. This shop is located five minutes away from Sri Kapaleeshwarar temple. I visited in the evening. Glowing atmosphere welcomed me. There are two round standing tables laid outside the shop. Inside there is a long slab laid for cooking, three chairs and a box displaying snacks made out of Karupatti.
The lady incharge pointed to the menu displayed beautifully in the wall. I tried Karupatti milk with Karupatti samosa. There are Karupatti Bhajji and Karupatti sandwiches. Karupatti pakoda, Karupatti savouries and Karupatti halwa is famous.
The lady to whom I spoke to said, just before corona phase they openend the shop. They had a tough time running the shop there after. Luckily from 2023 till date sales is steady and high. When I asked the famous selling product she mentioned was Karupatti coffee and Karupatti tea.
When question regarding making of Karupatti came “It’s homemade akka. Almost everyday we prepare at home”. Karupatti milk was served hot with taste of Karupatti, very less sugar. Karupatti samosa had a tinge of Karupatti that sweet, sour taste was felt.
A must visit shop of Mylapore located on the same area where Maami’s tiffin stall, Jannal kadai, the road leading to south mada and famous Sri Kapaleeshwarar is present.
