Kalga, Pulga and Tulga- the unexplored triplets of Parvati Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Hello all,

Hope you guys are doing great!

Popular amongst nature lovers, Parvati valley (Himachal Pradesh, lesser Himalayas) is known for its scenic views and extreme wilderness. One such destination in Parvati valley, Kasol has numerous unexplored and untouched hamlets which include the beautiful triplets of Kalga, Pulga and Tulga. Away from the chaotic crowd and untouched by typical tourists, this trio offers a blissful and peaceful stay with irresistible picturesque views around. On my last visit to Himachal Pradesh, I witnessed the exceptional beauty of this trio.

What background search did I do before going to Kalga?

The first thing I did was to check the weather conditions of Delhi, Kalga and Kasol. All three of them had a significant fluctuation of temperatures in late February. I packed my bag considering I love the trendy looks along with safeguarding myself. For 7 days of the trip, I had my compact travel capsule wardrobe ready in just one backpack!

How did I travel to Kalga?

I started my journey from Mumbai Airport to Delhi, where I met my fellow backpackers (Vagabond Experiences). We travelled from R. K. Ashram metro station, Delhi to Bhuntar by bus which was an overnight journey. After reaching Bhuntar, we freshened up, had some snacks and headed to Kasol by Jeep. From Kasol market, we changed to HRCT public transport till Barsheni. Barsheni is the last stop to reach any of these triplets by walking. We started trekking towards Kalga with our backpacks. The help that my co-travellers offered to each other was truly inspirational. It was not the first time I experienced strangers helping each other. No wonder, I am a fan of backpacking groups.

Where did I stay in Kalga?

After a small trek of about an hour, we reached our homestay in Kalga, Shiva Guest House. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, with no other houses around, this place felt soothing. This cosy homestay could accommodate 15 of us easily. The kitchen was just next to the tandoori room, which was one big hall with a conventional heating system called Tandoor or Bukhari. This room was our lifeline during evening times when temperatures dropped down to 2 or less!

What all did I visit at Kalga?

Being away from all touristic destinations, Kalga has immense potential to attract nature lovers and backpackers because of its scenic views and especially the Apple orchids. The usual mindset of backpackers is to find a scenic view, settle there and enjoy nature! Mine wasn’t any different. During our stay in Kalga, we explored nearby scenic places (unnamed) during day time when the temperature was bearable and did jam sessions or played games during night time in the Tandoor room. The evenings were soothing with that delicious local food with guitar sessions by our group head, Nihar. We also did a small trek to Pulga along the snowy paths. The mild music, the sunshine and the travel companion was a killing combination for my spiritual and mental healing on this tour.

After enjoying Kalga’s weather to the fullest, we headed back to Kasol where we stayed at the hotel Purple heaven. We explored multiple places in Kasol which are a lot more commercialised than those triplets. We could easily find cafes everywhere. During our stay at Kasol, I truly enjoyed the scenic views of the Parvati river. We spent hours along the Parvati river bank in cafes enjoying the snow-capped mountain views.

My trip to Kalga was super fun because of my travel companions. Unlike the typical mindsets of tourists, according to me, what one needs to do on such trips is relax and enjoy nature the way locals do!

Hope you guys will love reading about this location.

Stay safe!

Thank you @Austinelewex for your kind response.

Yes, it does snow in north India till late February or later and also few parts like Siachin (part of Union territory of Ladakh) reach as low as -50 degrees.

And the architectures are indeed beautiful with authentic touch in this region.

Nice to know you.
