JUNE INSPIRATION- NAIROBI ART GALLERIES

Hey ya’ll,

Back with another highlight of an art gallery cum non-profit organization that’s has been instrumental in helping visual artists in Kenya and the larger East Africa by offering them studio space to develop their skills through training, mentorship and artwork shop.

The Kuona Artists’ Collective, initially known as Kuona Trust was established in 1995 is located in the Kilimani area in Nairobi. Having worked with over 1000 artists since it was started, it not only offers training through art classes but it also has a program that facilitates cultural exchange with international artists through workshops and exhibitions.

The artists exhibit paintings, sculptures and photography which has a dedicated gallery known as “Upepo Photography Gallery” showcases photos from local artists.

One of the artworks from one artists in particular caught my eye, her name is Joy Maringa. She is a makeup artist by profession and is also now a lip artist that focuses on lip art. She’s one of the pioneers of lip art in Kenya which a pretty new type of artwork in this part of the world. She creates creates her art pieces on her lips using makeup then takes a picture of her lips and frames it. Check out her work on instagram through this handle @perkyarts

Entrance to the art center is free.
