Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu is a lovely place at the extreme end of the Indian land mass, a place with Swami Vivekananda’s touch. My well wishers had warned me that in my physical condition I should not venture. But I did not listen. After a short mechanized boat journey through the choppy seas I reached the massive rock that jutted out of the sea. But on landing my heart sank at the steep stairs that I had to take to climb up.
Fortunately, with the help of two very helpful gentlemen who literally lifted me up the innumerable stairs to reach the main hall with Swami Vivekananda’s lively full scale statue. God knows from where I gathered the strength.
Afterwards moved to the awesome meditation Hall which at the first impression looked dimly lit but then the eyes adjusted to the semi darkness. I do not know how I spent more than half an hour meditating. When I opened my eyes I could see a number of people in meditation.
One is at peace with oneself here, it is pure bliss.Facilities are superb and it is very clean. One can enjoy the greenish blue sea which laps at the massive rock. Gentle wind blowing from the shores cooled the effects of a fierce sun. Distant shores did not beckon and the mind wanted to stay permanently at the place. But one has to accept the reality and return to land.
Return journey was uneventful but then as we neared the shores we could see the lovely outline of the spires of a church, the buildings and the mundane everyday life. Tied to the shore an array of unmanned small boats swayed to the waves. I thought the boats were resting before their next arduous journey. It was so dream like that I promised myself to visit again.
