Jaisamand Lake Udaipur, Rajasthan, India

Jaisamand Lake, which was known as Dhebar Lake, was built by the ruler of Mewar, Maharana Jai ​​Singh, between 1687 and 1691. It is an artificial freshwater lake. It is located in the south-eastern region of the Aravalli mountain range. This lake is situated about 50 km from the Udaipur, Rajasthan. Only Cabs and personal vehicles are the best means to access this lake.

Maharana Jai ​​Singh built this artificial lake by building a dam on the Gomti River. Based on historical evidence, the length of this dam is about 375 meters, the width at the surface of which is about 20 meters, which is only 5 meters wide at a height of 35 meters. White stones were used in its construction. About 6 to 9 rivers and many streams are the main source of feeding this freshwater artificial lake during rain. This lake has an area about 14.5 km × 9.5 km and at some places it’s more than 100 feet deep. It’s Asia’s number 1 artificial lake of freshwater and named after Maharana Jai Singh builder of this marvelous Lake.

To access the water surface there are four flights of steps and four landings which are divided equally in six parts. Each part is constructed with a square pavilion at the top on a raised platform and the lower podium has light brown or yellow stone elephants which are not life size. Square Pavilion is erected on richly carved stone pillars which bears the decorated capitals for the support of beams on which stone hanging outs are supported on the projected capitals. A transition for constructing the base for the fluted dome with inverted lotus petals and finial at the peak and dome is surrounded by stone belustrade. Hence there are six pavilions and six elephants. This artificial lake has seven islands and one was built artificially by the Maharana Jai Singh as this lake is named after him.

This lake situated in the middle of Aravali hills is the main attraction among tourists during rainy season. The picturesque embankment and boating which is quite safe with life jackets are enough to double the delight. Nearby wildlife sanctuary and Narmadeshwar temple helps to connect with Nature.
