Jagdish Temple, Udaipur, Rajasthan, India

This is one of the most popular tourist attractions located in Udaipur close to the City Palace. Originally it’s known as Shree Jagannath Rai Ji, now it’s popular as Jagdish Temple.

It was built in 1651 by Maharana Shri Jagat Singh Ist. This temple is a splendid example of the Maru Gurjara style of architecture. This temple is situated on 50 artistic pillars, 125 feet high from the ground at the foot of the hill, with a 100-feet shikharband and a 28 feet high flag. Visible features are double storey Mandapa with attached covered pradakshina. Main Sanctum houses the four handed Vishnu carved out from the single black stone and the Shikara above is having two hallow spires. The Vahana is made of Brass (Garuda) facing the Lord Vishnu seated outside the Mandapa.

This multi storey temple’s exterior is intricately carved, depicting the mythological stories. It was attacked by Mughal army front portion of the temple was damaged. At that time, Shri Naruji Barhat, who was appointed to protect the temple, fought bravely with his 20 companions and were successful. In 1780, Maharana Sangram Singh II got this temple renovated.

It’s built as Panchaytana pattern all the four corners of the elevated platform is having small shrines of Ganesha, Surya, Shakti and Shiva whereas the middle grand temple is dedicated to the Lord Vishnu.

Its annual Rath Yatra remain a major attraction among the tourists. It’s a centre of faith among all the devotees. Many historical information are provided on a board.
