Walking along Jacatraweg, which is currently called Jalan Pangeran Jayakarta, you can find several cultural heritage sites, and several other places of worship that are unique, and even learnt dark history.
This street is an old lane in Jakarta, because it existed in the early 1700s, an elite area for luxury houses on the banks of the Ciliwung River canal.
Below is a photo taken from the Encyclopedia Jakarta, you can see the church standing next to the Ciliwung River.
You can find several tourist destinations that still exist today. These were locations that I visited during my walking tour friends from the Jakarta Good Guide.
Some of the buildings that still exist include the Zion Church https://goo.gl/maps/ftNP41x47WvFj2it5 which was built in 1695 is the oldest church in Jakarta. Our tour group did not go inside, currently there is a pandemic, so the church does not give permission.
Finding Bio Kwee Seng Ong https://goo.gl/maps/DapRrsLHGRXp3jgJ9 which is located in the Residents Housing area, indeed this bio has just been built in 2006, but the fact that this Bio is part of the diversity of cultures and religions in Indonesia, and also the unique architecture, you can visit as tourist destination. Of course, you have to use mask, physical distancing and also have to respect visitors who are worshiping.
Next destination, we visited Vihara Khema Tjouw Soe Kong, https://goo.gl/maps/RxNDZF5SemvPdmLQ6 the place is spacious, with red, yellow ornaments, and this is a place of worship, take enough photos and must respect friends who are worshiping.
Towards our next destination, we passed the Cracked Skin Market.
The Cracked Skin Market https://goo.gl/maps/HbiYfDkedNdhjFai9 itself only represents a shopping place but the history behind it is very dark.
Imagine the death penalty from the Dutch government to Dutch citizens who were considered treasonous, the punishment is that the person is pulled by 4 horses from 4 directions so that his body will be split apart and therefore the area was named as Cracked Skin.
In this area there used to be an inscription to commemorate that dark story. Currently stored in the Jakarta History Museum.
We continue to the next destination, namely the Tomb of Prince Jayakarta https://goo.gl/maps/bj5GgEcxqVuPUzJ9A Therefore this street is called Jalan Pangeran Jayakarta. The location of his tomb is in a mosque
Next we will walk to the last destination, namely the Ancient Tomb of Captain Souw Beng Kong.
https://goo.gl/maps/CgCLy9EKE7PepVyUA
The location is in a residential area in the midst of dense population but actually this is a historic tomb because he was buried in 1644.
Even to get inside, we have to go through a lot of family housing. If I wasn’t guided by the guide, and I didn’t take a tour from the community, I would never have known about the existence of historical sites in the Prince Jayakarta area.
Nothing special to walk in center of Jakarta, but this route is unique, not many people know about it, even me!
Explore Jakarta with all its history, make sure you join a community suitable for a walking tour, so you can enjoy Jakarta uniquely from another point of view and of course add experience and friends.
