Waterfall on river hot and sour - water contained sulphury acid. It’s likely impossible to drink this water 'cos teeth begins to ache - when water penetrates into mouth it erases teeth and lips.
Whoa! It looks like a magical place! Can you share more information about the island and the routes around it? Also, what is that smoke by the river where you walked? Is that a secret volcano? 0.0
It’s really wild place. Almost without roads. We went along rivers knee-deep or deeper. Another possible way with a boat along shore. But in a middle of island by feet only. Smoke is sulfur volcano gas. There are several volcanos, one or two are active.
That’s quite an adventurous island as it seem, @Makarov_Oleg ! I can only imagine the fresh water rivers and enchanting forests of this place. Are all trails marked?
It’s very interesting to read that there are active volcanoes too. Did you see any leaks or was it just the smoke that you have experienced there?

Just got through the latest updates and I find it much better indeed, @Makarov_Oleg . Loved the Pearl Harbor mention. Probably because this is part of one of the popular days of the history. I don’t know.
It is also interesting to see that there are people actually in the cold water. I mean, isn’t it a bit … erm, freezing? You have mentioned of the tooth ache, so that’s what puzzles me a bit. It will be interesting to read more about that too
On the area access, this is curious to hear of such zones. Curiosity killed the cat but tales around such locations are fun. Have you heard of any?
Japan fleet was especially collected in such distance place to hide against reconnaissance. Japan fleet even moved indirectly to Hawaii - long way about 6000 miles! Many people knows about that battle by famous film. But film means tale. I read a book of Japan marine officer. It’s closer to true.
About permission to zone.
I think it’s probably possible. There are no any travel company to organize tour now. But I think it will be for a while, because tourism means money.
But Kamchatka is simple available for everyone. Native travel companies and private persons moves throng of foreign to active volcanoes. Active volcano doesn’t means always fire and lava eruption. Usually sulphur smoke and boiling water. And it’s safety enough.
About water.
Rivers sometimes warm even hot. Very cool seldom. If you goes in the shoes and clothes even soggy, it protect against freezing.
About teeth.
Water in that place - waterfall - contains acid. When water penetrates into mouth it erases teeth and lips.
I cannot miss appreciating the first hand experience, opinion and clarification you are constantly providing and I am serious on this one, @Makarov_Oleg ! I am not a fan of the fictional elements in movies when talking about history, so personal observations are much appreciated. Thanks a lot
Travel does mean economical benefits and if local authorities manage to do proper limitations even close to any military bases or volcano craters, it will be fantastic. Many travellers are curious about such locations, for sure (curiosity killed the cat but this island does look interesting. I have never heard of it but photos and your experience sound amazing. It’s on my future travels list and Google Maps explorations, for sure)
Considering the volcanoes, I can agree the water is warm when they are like active-active. However Iturup is impressive. Have only seen the Rupite thermal lakes and even those were not that worm to provide warm water, during the cold weather. I have only heard of the inuring process of showering with cold water. Appears it’s quite the opposite at Iturup What a world! What’s to ask about is, that acid you have mentioned. Is it because of the volcanic activity? (even minimal)
P.S. In addition, yes, you are right about the Kamchatka article. I am seriously looking forward to it!
After checking your article, I did some digging and read about the Japanese base indeed. Since every country has to maintain their buildings, it’s curious who’s ward is it under because according to the records, Burevestnik (kind of poetical considering the distance and historical meaning of this base) is still functioning but it was under both Japanese and Russian exploitation. Also, it’s become hard to believe that it’s possible a fog to close an airport. Is it that thick, @Makarov_Oleg ?* Sofia Airport and Iturup commercial airport, for example, are rarely closed because of such conditions. Fog sonars make the difference, I guess. As a person working in Travel, I am kind of interested in doing the flights and transportation reads. This is where this interest comes from.
I know how fanatic the air forces can be, so my bets are on the air field when speaking about the access restrictions. It’s a key position after all. Although, really Although!, the danger of volcano activity, gas leaks, tectonic position of the island and water chemical structure are literally Devil’s argument on that! We don’t need another Pompeii.
Would also be curious to know if you have observation on the weather at this island. It’s way north compared to the latitudes I have been, also I have never been on such a small island, in the Pacific.
I see, you know about airport on Iturup more than me. Actually we knew about weather troubles in the Burevestnik airport. Sometimes people waited fly for week! Then in 2014 we used ship. It spent about 3 days, because ship visited several ports on islands.
Today in the Iturup built new airport with modern navigation equipment. We have plans to be in the Iturup again soon - in the august 2019. I mean to test new airport But some members of our team prefers to use ship. I be afraid sea storm travel will difficult for me. In the 2014 sea was very quietly during both ways.
Also I have plans in the June - July go to Pamir mountain for try to reach Lenin peak again. In the 2017 I have attempt to climb that peak, but failed. It’s me on the way to Lenin peak 2017
I’ve never been in the Bulgaria, although it’s so easy now!
About volcano danger. Volcanoes are far enough from airports and any settlements. Lava can’t reach for this distance and Pompeii are likely impossible. And active volcano doesn’t means always eruption. Modern science can foresee real dangers. Earthquake is problem still, but buildings there have special construction to minimize damages.
It’s especially interesting you are professional travel. I’ll keep you informed about transportation details if you interested about it.
