Is Google Maps Giving the Wrong Directions?

Recently, I experienced a confusing issue with Google Maps navigation in Malaysia, where vehicles drive on the left side of the road (British system).

Here’s what happened:

I was coming up a ramp to a toll gate intersection. There were two possible directions: Right → Leads to the main road. Left → Leads to another toll gate lane. However, Google Maps told me to “turn left” for both directions!

I needed to go right to reach the main road, but Google Maps kept saying “turn left” regardless of which direction I chose.

This made me wonder: Is this a mistake, or is there a reason for it?

Normally, a left turn means going left, and a right turn means going right. But this navigation instruction was really confusing.

That sounds like a frustrating experience! :automobile::dashing_away: Google Maps navigation can sometimes misinterpret complex intersections, especially in regions with unique road layouts or multiple lanes leading in different directions.

This issue could be caused by:

  1. Map Data Errors – The mapping system may not have accurately recorded the toll gate structure.
  2. GPS Inaccuracy – Slight delays in GPS tracking can sometimes cause incorrect instructions.
  3. Lane Guidance Misinterpretation – In countries with left-hand driving, some instructions might not be localized correctly.

A good workaround is to cross-check with satellite view or Street View before your trip. Also, reporting the issue to Google Maps can help improve future navigation accuracy.

I think this is a problem with the algorithm. It must be on the right to the human eye, but from the point of view of the mathematical algorithm, it is necessary to go to the left because it is an added path from the right. So, I think the country on the left needs to modify the algorithm.
