Is a picture always worth a 1000 words?

We’ve all seen great photos here in the Photography topic of Connect and quite often together with the title of the post, the photos speak for themselves and we say “wow, what a great photo”. However, I’m finding more and more each day that some photos, while they might be great, the story behind them can be significantly improved with some descriptive words to describe the place (e.g. a beach, a lake, or a mountain), or thing (e.g. a building, flower, statue or tree), or the situation (e.g. a sunset, rainbow). While I agree with the core message in the great post How to tell a story through your photography, I believe that no matter how good a photo is, it would be made much, much better if a great description of the photo is also added. Where is this beach? When did you visit there? What else did you see there? Where did you take this sunset snap? What is this flower? Why did you take the photo? Why do you like it? What camera and perhaps camera settings did you use? etc etc etc. I see it a bit like reviews on Maps, we could simply give a 5 star rating of a cafe and add a photo of our coffee but not write a review, say nothing, zero, zilch about the cafe, the ambiance, the coffee, the service, the location etc etc etc. Your review readers would very likely say ‘yeah, and, what the heck?’ Was it a god coffee? What about the wait staff service? Was the cafe clean? Is it accessible friendly? And so on!

Yes the ‘best photos tell a story by sparking an emotion or sharing a message’ but I believe that that story could be significantly enhanced by the photographer sharing some details about it. Yes you may get some likes, but imagine how many more likes you would get by sharing more information about the photo and by engaging with your post’s (Map and Connect) readers!

I don’t know about you however I’ve written this post because I look at some photos here on Connect and say to myself “hmmm, yeah, and?”. In other words, I’m left wanting or feel cheated or short changed. I’m keen to know more about the photo and why you took it, why you like, why did you post it and so on. In other words engage with me! Help me to better understand and appreciate the photo(s) better. Sure some might think “hmmm, nice photo” and give you a Like but this is a lost opportunity. Let’s make it much more exciting! Tell me more and let’s really engage. Make me want to be there myself and see the place, thing or whatever myself.

I do hope you follow the point I’m trying to make and can see the positive in what I’m trying to say here. My hope is that if we all were to do this we would significantly improve the quality of Connect posts, particularly those in this Photography topic, and no doubt the reviews we write on Maps.

What do you think?

ps: I wrote this post several times but deleted it. I was worried that I might offend some. But then after seeing more and more of these wanting photos, I felt that I needed to write it! I felt that it might help some! Again please see this as intended, a constructive criticism.

I agree with you @AdamGT . A picture alone is sometimes not a enough. Words are often used to truly capture the story behind each photograph and to even give more insight about the photograph.

We can improve this by asking questions under such Photographs and thereby fostering more engaging photos on Connect and even the Photography topic.

I noticed this is most likely your favourite topic in Connect because of how you found my post about the Pier Restaurant, Abuja.

Hi @Zino

Thank you so much for taking the time and for your positive reply. The Photography board was my favorite place on Connect and this is because of my passion and love of Photography and travel which just go hand-in-hand. Contributing photography posts and learning from those of others about the beautiful places in different parts of the world made it my favorite board. But the deterioration in quality of posts as described led to my cry out for change post, a cry out for improved content quality. Sadly I fear that if this doesn’t happen the board will eventually die.

Thank you @SaumendraKundu

Personally, I believe that many will share my view but reluctant to be first to write it in a post. However, because of my passion for photography and travel I was compelled to come out on a limb and express my view on this with the hope of changing and improving things before it’s too late!

Hello @AdamGT , you’re welcome. I believe change can start with you, you can start by hosting a virtual meetup on photography during which you’ll teach everyone how to take better pictures for Maps\Connect and even give photography tips.

Then, you can also comment on new posts under the Photography topic, ask questions under the post for more details and even give photography tips under such post.

Hi @Zino

I don’t think your suggested approach is appropriate as the issue I have raised in my post is not about the quality of the posted photo(s). It’s about the quality of or lack of description that goes with the photo(s). On this, I’m no gun photographer. I’m just a beginner and said exactly this in my CL2020 post. There are other Local Guides much more capable than myself who can teach everyone how to take better pictures for Maps/Connect and also give photography tips and besides, this regularly happens on Connect. Great tips are routinely given like those often posted in the Photo of the Week post. Having said that I’m more than willing and have quite often commented on new posts along the lines that you have suggested. The problem is, and as I mentioned in my post, the volume of posts that need such comments is growing so much that I would be spending considerable time doing this. My thinking is that a dedicated post like this one might be a more efficient way of doing this. That is, rather than commenting on each and every post that needs this commentary, put the message in one central place and if need be refer to that central message.

I see. That’s makes a lot of sense. @AdamGT

@AdamGT Once more, I agree 100% with you. Last year I posted an idea (unfortunately it was closed) to create some kind of limit of words on Connect Posts to prevent spams and to increase the quality of the contributions. You can read it here (Minimum characters for Connect Posts), but my point was precisely this: “Even if you are sharing a photo, writing 200 characters is not a big deal, once you can use it to create a great caption”.

Thank you for sharing!

Thanks @AdamGT your thoughts are mine too. Is true, there’s a story in everywhere and we are here to read and know more about you through the story behind the picture. To be honest when I started to post here I thought that photography board was to share a beautiful photo and nothing more. After a few pictures without a good description I learned the right way to collaborate, to be more interesting my posts. When you’re new here Connect can be a little complicated. This post is not offensive at all, is helpful!

Thanks Adam!

Greetings.

I’m excited that you agree @OliverKIWI , enough is enough. This is up to us. We need to improve the quality of our content. On this I hope you see and support my other campaign now on the go in Connect’s How-to board regarding Likes.

That’s a great point @AdamGT

To be honest while posting here mostly snapshots the dime changes extremely when I am taking pictures with my camera. What you are mentioning will be a great quality upgrade for the postings. I was even thinking to post for the great minority some of my b/w work but then I just let it be.

I am coming here after work or during my trip by bus as a mind changing activity which turns into a pain in the @$$ because some things doesn’t work properly. And after 3 hours, which took me to prep my last posting, to just receive a Like/Like that some others earn a badge, this is somehow too much for me. I want to exchange thoughts and ideas which happens in a small circle, but isn’t it like that in real life as well? I mean, you know what I mean. Not everyone we see day by day, say hello, and ask how are you are really our spiritual friends and partners.

When I joined this platform I was glad joining something like the inner circle, from which I also found the patterns of.

By the way, it is really a cute cat. What is her name?

I totally agree with you @AdamGT

A change must come in the very beginning otherwise it will keep going on the same way.

Hi @AlexandreCampbell

I just read your earlier post and can see that your idea of having a 200 minimum character limit was closed but notwithstanding you’ve joined the many others here and supported what I’m saying in this post. I guess it’s up to us to make sure that our great photo(s) are made even greater in the Photography board of Connect by adding an interesting story to support them. Thanks again for supporting what I’m saying here.

Hi @SilvyC

Great that you agree that the story behind the photo(s) is important. I do agree that when you’re new here on Connect one can be unsure on what’s expected and what’s best and I guess it’s up to posts like this to cover this uncertainties and ‘explain’ and ‘suggest’ the best approach. Thanks for your support.

Hi @JacobLED and thanks for your support.

I’m just raising a concern here about the ‘quality’ of posts, particularly on this topic and while I was worried that I was going to offend some, I’m glad that many including yourself are supporting the thrust of the message that I am making. I am myself am now refusing to waste my Likes on posts that don’t at least make some attempt to support the contained photo(s) where such support is needed.

@AdamGT I have realized this, many very beautiful photographs but that do not tell us anything, do not motivate us to visit that site or to inquire more about it … this publication is very timely and successful … in this forum I have only I published a photograph in the photographs section, because I consider that it is not publishing for publishing … thank you very much for sharing your concepts and advice … I also like the publication of Mrs. Cristina.

Yes @Robert24 many “beautiful photographs but that do not tell us anything, do not motivate us to visit that site or to inquire more about it”. I’m sorry but I don not know which publication of Mrs. Cristina you mention.

@AdamGT I mean “How to tell a story through your photography” from Christina-NYC that I was aware of because you name it in this post … although, as you say, a photograph without text does not contribute much in this forum. …
