Today, on December 11, 2024, we celebrate International Mountain Day, a day dedicated to honoring the majestic mountains that shape our planet’s landscapes, cultures, and ecosystems. This year’s theme, “Restoring Mountain Ecosystems”, emphasizes the critical need to protect these vital environments from the threats of climate change, deforestation, and overexploitation.

Mountains cover 25% of the Earth’s land area and are home to 15% of the global population, providing essential resources like water, food, and clean air. They are the source of life for countless species and a haven for diverse cultures and traditions. Yet, mountains face unprecedented challenges, from melting glaciers to biodiversity loss.

Here’s how you can get involved:

:one: Spread Awareness: Share the importance of mountains and their ecosystems with your community.
:two: Support Conservation Efforts: Donate or volunteer with organizations working to protect mountain environments.
:three: Practice Sustainable Tourism: If you visit mountains, leave no trace and support local communities.
:four: Advocate for Climate Action: Push for policies that protect mountain regions and combat global warming.

As we celebrate this day, let’s pledge to work together to ensure a sustainable future for these awe-inspiring natural wonders. Let’s protect the mountains—they protect us!

A perfect example of mountain biodiversity and cultural significance is the Himalayan region, including my favourite and the vibrant Rosemala in Kerala, India. Known for its stunning landscapes and unique ecosystems, it’s a reminder of the delicate balance we must preserve.

This International Mountain Day, let’s renew our commitment to safeguarding mountains for future generations. How are you celebrating or contributing? Share below!

Wonderful day to celebrate @SarathUpendran :+1:
Raising awareness about mountains, and their importance in our daily lives is necessary for the the flora and fauna they host. These directly influence our lives.

This morning, I climbed up the Baner Hills near my home.
Earlier in June, on the World Environment Day, we also did a plantation meetup here.

Back in 2020 I also wrote a post about plantations on the hills in Pune:
