International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2020

United Nations proclaimed the 3rd of December as the International Day for People living with Disabilities (IDPwD).

There are several challenges and obstacles faced by people with disabilities. These include poorer health, lower education achievements, low employment and higher rates of poverty.

There are over one billion people living with one form of disabilities or the other. Imagine the challenges they face everyday. Today is dedicated as an observance to take actions to ensure PwDs are included in all aspects of the society.

The theme for 2020 IDPwD is “Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”.

All disabilities are not visible, this is why barriers (structural, technological and attitudinal) should be removed to foster inclusiveness.

Local Guides have continued to play significant roles in making the world more inclusive by adding millions of information on Google Maps and hosting meetups to create awareness in our communities.

One Accessibility Initiative has been going the extra mile to increase awareness through our weekly articles known as Accessibility Uncovered and also getting experts to share their experiences via our webinars.

As part of the annual commemoration , we are hosting Worldwide Accessibility Walk (WAW) from December 1 - 11, 2020. We also have a special virtual meet-up to learn more about inclusive design and accessible environments from renowned experts.

Thank to all Local Guides around the world helping to make our communities accessible for all.

Please, tell us how you are celebrating this event in your community. Are you hosting a physical or virtual meet-up? Do you have engagements with PwDs or supporting them with resources?

We believe nobody should be left behind especially during pandemics. Let us help make the world more inclusive and accessible for everyone.

Hi @EmekaUlor Thanks For Sharing…

Hi @EmekaUlor Thanks for creating more awareness about disabilities. I just picked a line here when you said some disabilities are not visibility and people might not noticed them. This is more reason barriers should be removed. True to talk. We should continue to compaign for people with disabilities , for barriers to be removed and special features create for their conveniences.
