On my first ever trip to the United States, the flight landed at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport which is the international airport of Detroit. It is normally called the Detroit Metro Airport, Metro Airport, or just DTW for its IATA code.
This was also the place where I saw for the first time a train running right inside an airport. In India, tight integration of bus-stops with a railway station is quite common so much that one may not leave the premises to catch a bus after deboarding from an inter-city train journey. So initially I thought this might be a train that will take me from inside the airport terminal to various parts of the city.
To my utter surprise, I soon discovered that the DTW was so huge and spread out that the train was in fact an inter-terminal carriage. I was dumbfounded on hearing this.
The reason behind running such a train was that the DTW being the busiest airport in Michigan has 2 terminals and 4 concourses A, B, C, and D of which concourse A in the McNamara Terminal is an incredible 1 mile long. There are 110 departure gates at DTW and the train, locally called the Express Tram, runs all the concourses in just 5 minutes.
At the DTW I noticed several facilities for passengers like restaurants and even bars, ATMs, information desk, a pet relief area, baby care facilities, and even a shoeshine service which is normally found on the street sides back in India. To top it all, there was even a children’s play area.
Later I also learned from Detroit residents that the DTW is a hub for Delta Air Lines and a focus city for Spirit Airlines and the total traffic was a staggering 36 million passengers in 2019 alone.
As I got down from the inter-terminal train I walked towards the exit gates and passed through beautifully illuminated passages as seen in the photo below. The colors changed gradually creating a mesmerizing effect which was also soothing to the mind when walking over long distances.
