Rayer Bazar Boddhobhumi is a memorial site in Dhaka, Bangladesh, dedicated to the Bangladeshi intellectuals who were murdered by the Pakistani forces during the 1971 Liberation War. The site features the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial, a curved brick wall with a water body, symbolizing the brick field where the bodies were found and the grief of the nation. It was constructed between 1996 and 1999 and serves as a solemn monument to the sacrifices made for Bangladesh’s independence.
These intellectuals, including doctors, journalists, professors, and artists, were targeted for their role in the Bengali nationalist movement. Their bodies were dumped in the area. On the night of December 14, 1971, over 200 intellectuals were tortured and executed.
After the war ended, their bodies were found piled up in the swamps of Rayer Bazaar. Now every December 14 is observed annually in Bangladesh as Shaheed Buddhijibi Dibosh (Martyred Intellectuals Day) to remember their sacrifice.
This is a most historic place in our country. After visiting this place my heart go back on that day & feel the tragedic pain & sorrow.
