If you’re a Muslim traveler putting together a “dream mosque” bucket list, I’m pretty sure this one is going to be right at the top. I recently visited Turkey during Ramadan, and it was an incredible experience.
On my first day, I was looking for a good spot for Iftar and remembered that the government provides free meals near the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque. Since visiting the mosque was already on my wishlist, I decided to head over and see it for myself.
Because it’s such a major historical site, you’ll need to stand in a security line first. There are some standard checks, but once you walk in, the beauty of the place is just amazing. It’s honestly one of those spots where you get so caught up in the atmosphere that you actually forget to take photos.
What to Know Before You Go
- Accessibility: It’s open to everyone: non-Muslims, women, children, and it’s wheelchair accessible.
- Rules: Women just need to follow the standard mosque dress code before entering.
- Facilities: If you need to perform Wudu (ablution), the rooms are located outside the main building.
After praying inside, you can head back out and join the queue for the free Iftar. It’s a great community atmosphere.
Iftar Menu:
- Simit (Turkish sesame bread)
- A cup of soup
- A different extra bread
- Water and a cup of tea
At first glance, the meal might look light, but trust me it’s actually very filling.
If you ever find yourself in Istanbul during Ramadan, don’t miss out on visiting this mosque and experiencing the Iftar there. It’s a memory you’ll definitely want to have.
