From Top this is the third panel engraved on the front face of the right pillar of Western Gateway, which is one of the entrance gateways of the Great Stupa.
The panel below also shows a Bodhi-tree with an empty throne below, and two small trees on either side. Either side Kinnaras who are holding the divine gifts in their hands. Close to left small tree two people and right side one with greetings postures. Below the Bodhi Tree few people, seven in number, are shown standing in a greeting posture.
According to Sir John Marshall, this illustration significantly indicates the Indra’s visit to Buddha’s hermit, as Bodhi Tree is surrounded by the flora.
The lowest panel on this face depicts three lions, who are looking forward with the whole body being visible except the middle one, one in the centre and two on either side, standing on their front paws.
The lions depicted here symbolize physical and spiritual strength. In Buddhist art and architecture, they protect temples and sacred places like on this Gateway of the Great Stupa. Vines and leaves are shown around the panel.
This three lions panel upper band contains the classical Brahmi Inscription which is in Pali language. It’s inscribed according to the writing and ancient languages experts, as : Aya-chudasa atevasino Balamitrasa thabho - means A gift of Balamitra, pupil of Ayachuda ( Arya Kshudra ), the preacher of Dharma.
