Incorrect Marathi village names on Google Maps — does this solution really work?
Hello Local Guides!
While exploring and updating places on Google Maps in Maharashtra,
I noticed that many villages have incorrect Marathi translations of their names.
For example
English Name Incorrect Marathi Correct Marathi
Kamargaon कमार्गओन कामरगाव
Maka मका माका
Dongargan दोगार्गान डोंगरगाव
Nagapur नागपूर नागापूर
These are official map entities (village boundaries) added by Google, not user-added places.
That’s why the regular “Suggest an edit” option doesn’t work here.
Has anyone else tried this method before?
Did it actually work for you — did the name get corrected on Maps?
How many days takes to change name?
Does any email received regarding change of name?
Is there any simpler or faster way to fix these Marathi village name errors?
Please share your experience below — it’ll help many Local Guides working on regional map accuracy.
Why this matters
Correct names help improve navigation, postal services, and preserve our language identity.
Let’s make Google Maps show the right Marathi spellings — one village at a time!
Glad you brought this up @Bansodesomnath . I’ve also seen a few wrong village names but didn’t go further because of the missing edit option. Your experience gives hope that maybe feedback really helps……
As you already know it is very difficult to change village names in any language.
This comes down to protecting the data quality on Google Maps.
I’m not aware of examples where sending feedback actually worked, so I would like to explain the two methods that are more likely to be effective.
Please understand that without official and copyright free documentation that Google can archive with each if such changes you are unlikely to be successful.
The only path available to you is then to seek help from the volunteer product experts in the Google Maps Help Community.
Here you need to make a post carefully explaining the needed change with Maps links and the convincing official documentation. The product experts can guide you on what documentation is sufficient. Start with a single village to learn the process.
Be warned this can be a lot if work.
The second and better method involves your local authorities. They can partner with Google Maps to automatically and regularly upload their geospatial data to Google Maps.
This is not something you as a Local Guide can do but you can encourage your local authorities to do this. It can be difficult to find the responsible municipal employee who “owns” the relevant data that is in a digital format, and who is motivated and allowed to take in the extra responsibility to set up such a content partnership with Google.
This last method is likely the only feasible solution as you mentioned there are many naming errors.
I hope this gives you some insight into your kimit d options in such issues.
Re your other questions.
After sending feedback in Google Maps you will never be notified. But you can find an archive if the feedback you provided.
About how long it takes, the partnership path is very fast and reliable as the partner is pre-trusted.
I agree with you, @Bansodesomnath. We are unable to alter the names of government buildings, roads, villages, etc. We can either escalate it to the support team or raise the issue here and tag the appropriate people, such as product experts if you know.
This is a prime example of @Shubhu1 changing the name of Aurangabad to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar successfully with the assistance of the support staff and our cherished local guide and product expert @NareshDarji bhai, who helped her along the way.
I’ve tagged them here; please continue with their assistance and recommendations.
Just letting you know that there will be a slight delay in the support team’s response because they have too many complaints to handle.
नमस्कार @Bansodesomnath
