Incorrect local names

Hi,

Hope all good with google map guys and fellow community members.

In the past, I had written a few times saying that names of roads or places in local language are not correctly written in the google map. This is a linguistic/phonetic issues which can be solved only by human beings not AI.

Things have improved but still lots of such misspelled names need to be corrected.

One more thing that bothers me is, why the name tags (names of roads, rivers, shops etc) disappear when I zoom in? Presently one can see the name tags depending on the zoom level. As you zoom in new names appear while the name of the establishment next door disappears. Shops, banks, roads, rivers, lakes etc are immovable, why they visibility should depend on zoom scale? Name tag should be visible irrespective of zoom level.

Wishing all a warm day ahead from India.

Take care

Hi @Bhaskar_From_India

I agree with the issue of zooming in and finding out that the names of the lanes and roads are often disappearing. In fact a lot of business names also go missing sometimes.

@NareshDarji @MortenCopenhagen Please see if you can suggest something on this.

Thanks

Hi @Bhaskar_From_India

If all labels on Google Maps should be visible at all zoom levels then the map would become a lot less user-friendly. In many areas, there are way more places and businesses than can practically be shown on the map. If all were shown you would not be able to read most of the names. I believe that is why the selection of pins to be shown is dynamic. Did you notice that Google Maps shows pins depending on your history and interests?

All the best

Hi Prateek,

Thanks for your response.

Actually I could never appreciate the lack of response from team google map. Sometimes the edits that I send do not get posted though those were correct. This happens when the fact checking team is not thorough with the subject or they are not sincere. This resulted in gradual reduction in my contributions/reviews/phots etc

Anyway, I hope @NareshDarji @MortenCopenhagen are going to take some steps.

Take care, wishing all the best

Hi Morten,

I do understand what you said. However, a mechanism needs to be developed. For example, a mall or commercial complex carries an additional tab showing floor plans. This declutters the map and at the same time acts as a pointer to the user to check various floors. One can check various floors to see where their shop is located.

On my recent road trip from Delhi to Calcutta, many a times I wanted to know the names of the forest area or river or place that I am passing by but couldn’t because one cant drive a car and keep changing the zoom level of the map at the same time.

Instead of saying why this is not done, I would like someone to appreciate that this is an issue and a solution needs to be explored.

Hi @Bhaskar_From_India

It would be very helpful if you would use the tagging tool when replying to someone here on Connect. Type @ followed by the username. Type slowly. Then we get an e-mail notification and you are more likely to get a prompt reply. Just hitting Reply does not ensure we get notified by email.

Thanks for the follow-up.

The likelihood that Google will make changes to Maps based on user input is very very low from experience. So I was just being realistic

Using phones while driving a car is illegal in many places. What are the rules in India? No matter the rules it is risky and can lead to accidents.

I have made it an automatic habit to zoom in and out when I don’t see what I was hoping to see. That sometimes help, but to really know what is in the Maps database zooming is not sufficient. We need to make a text search to be sure. This should always be done before trying to add a new place on Google Maps to avoid duplicate places.

Google Maps is making educated guesses as to what pins to show you. You could try searching and opening a pin or geographical feature you want to see while navigating - that might prompt Google Maps to show i on more zoom levels. Please test and let me know the results.

You could also test if adding such places and geographical features to a list of yours will make then more visible. Maybe the list “Want to visit” could help you.

How would you suggest Google Maps should solve the problem with too much information (clutter on the map if street names and names of rivers and lakes should be shown permanently across zoom levels?

Today Indoor Maps can only be added by property owners and their authorized representatives as mentioned here. Furthermore, Indoor Maps are only available in the areas listed here. The problem is not only when there are more floors - places can also be very dense on one level.

Cheers

Morten
