In the shadow of the last sun - Isle of the Dead

In the shadow of the last sun - Isle of the Dead -

The title, and some words at the beginning of this post are inspired by a song by a famous Italian singer-songwriter, Fabrizio de Andrè

The macabre name tells us about this place of memory of the final battle which, on October 26, 1918, marked the end, in Italy, of the First World War.

Isle of the Dead is the place that, after the final battle, was covered “by the corpses of the soldiers, carried downstream by the current [of the river]” (Song: La guerra di Piero)

In search of places away from the hustle and bustle, I visited the Isle of the Dead a few days ago, and I did it in the middle of the afternoon. The clear sky and the setting sun created a very particular light effect, sharp, with a strong contrast of light and shadow. For this reason I wanted to title the post “in the shadow of the last sun” (Song: il Pescatore)

It is a strange sensation to walk along these avenues that flank the woods, while silhouettes of soldiers, in a play of light and shadow, appear and disappear next to us.

The long central avenue of the park leads us to the “celebratory” part, the monumental one where a stone pyramid and some sculptures commemorate and remind us of the immense tragedy that took place in these places.

However, the visit is also an opportunity to visit a natural oasis, with ponds, walks, and a playground / picnic area.

Fully accessible :wheelchair: if you enterfrom the main entrance, while from the Fontigo entrance the narrow passage does not allow wheelchair access. I specifically wanted to highlight this last details in both my reviews:

Unfortunately, due to the position, there is no way to reach the park using the public services.

Want to know more about the area of WW1?

If you love nature, a few minutes by car from the Isle of the Death you can reach “Fontane Bianche” oasis: Accessible Life - Autumn @ Fontane Bianche

I will be happy to guide you around my country, @Sagir , I can’t wait to see you here.

I am sure the whole Italian Community will love to do it, as we did already for others, like @TorM , @AlejandraMaria , @JaneBurunina @uavalentine and @NatalkaR , just to mention a few of the more popular Local Guides

As I told you already, @SoniaK , what I love in my area are the small town, parks, piece of history and nature that you can find all around. All of them are in the shadow of Venice, the majestic city that everyone in the world wants to visit

But if you want to move in the shadow, you will discover another world, made of castles, nature, mountain peaks, walled medieval cities, food, and more.

As you already know, you just need to ping me. As I said to Traci already, I will be happy to candidate my area, when the pandemic will be over, as the perfect Location for Connect Live.

I am adding a tag for @plavarda , the photo is for you too, Paolo

Thanks @ErmesT . As you can see in the photograph, there are some species of orchids with a red dot, with the indication at the bottom that they once were but have not recently been found. It is clearly an indicator of CLIMATE CHANGE. The indicated species are species of medium hills and low mountains, to be clear from 400 to 1200 meters above sea level. They are disappearing below and moving higher and higher cause the heat. And there are still those who say it’s not true !!!

Thank you so much, @NareshDarji

Nature is all around us, and this lockdown is giving me the opportunity to explore what is close to me.

With the aim of traveling, we usually want to travel far, postponing the exploration of places close to home to “later”.
Now the “later” has arrived, and this allows us to break the habits and look for new places close to us.

I am discovering that there is a lot to see here too, and if you have the opportunity to come to Italy, I will be happy to guide you

Yes @plavarda

with the climate change the vegetation is changing too, together with the birds that we have now in the area, and the fishes in the northern Adriatic, that are completely from the ones we had 10 years ago

I’m fine too, @SalmaanN , waiting impatiently to be able to travel again, and on the meantime trying to enjoy as much as I can the few hours on the weekend when we can go out.

Discovering new places, and talking with friends here in Connect.

I wish everything will be over soon

Hi @ErmesT ,

what a great post and to be honest, I didn’t know about this place at all, so thank you very much for that.

I can feel that strange sensation already looking at your photos, so can imagine what you describe in real and I like the beautiful landscapes around. It is indeed something on the list to visit, I find always interesting places with history behind or better say where history developed.

Thank you once more for sharing it!

All the area is a piece of history, @LuigiZ and indeed, if you like to know more about what was called “the war of Piave river” you should go there. I wrote several post about WW1, some of them is linked in my post here.

Incidentally, the place is also in the middle of the Prosecco Hills and for everyone, excluding @plavarda , this is an extra benefit. In any case Paolo visited the area with us during the second wine meet-up, together with @mariacristinafossa and @davidhyno , and they can confirm the historical beauty of the places

Wonderful @ErmesT , I like of course the extra benefit so this is definitely a plus. I’m sorry for @plavarda but I know he joins also without that extra benefit hehe  .
