As one of the most popular cities in the world, and one of the most romanticized as well, Paris attracts so many tourists every year. When they get there and see it for what it really is, some are disappointed and shocked. The Japanese embassy in France actually sends tourists back to Japan because of this.
They call it the Paris Syndrome - the utter disappointment at realizing how Paris is not how one imagined it to be.
Whenever we visit famous places, we tend to think about only seeing the famous attractions. But we get there, it’s inevitable to see the daily life that goes on around and under the famous landmarks.
But like every other popular city, you have to accept it as it is - because it’s part of what makes the city’s personality.
Crowded, busy, dirty …
…and yet it’s still filled with beauty and character.
The unique personality of Paris came to be not only because of its romance and beauty but also because of how tough and rough it can be. Sure it is always busy. Some tourists I meet tell me that the local Parisians can be rude (I mean, wouldn’t you be too - if your home town is filled with rude tourists?). Everything is expensive. There are so many pick-pockets and scammers …
But then again, there are so many artists everywhere. Beautiful buildings and historical landmarks are well preserved. Museums with masterpieces are everywhere. Soft and delicious croissants and creme brulee are available in almost every cafe.
If you take a walk around the city, you’ll find that the variety of the street merchandise is bountiful. It’s so diverse that it’s quite amusing.
Of course the streets do not exist without the sad views.
When you go into a city, do not miss the chance to walk around it. There are always things to see that most people tend to miss. Take some time to pause and do some research before or during your travel.
What was the most unexpected experience for you when you went to a famous city?
