[In-Person] Tanzania, July 26, [In-Person] Tanzania: Ngorongoro Photo Expedition Meetup (#LGCBirthday)

Cover is created using Google Gemini depicting Ngorongoro Crater.

Hello Local Guides!

As part of the unofficial worldwide celebration marking 10 Years of Local Guides Connect, I am incredibly excited to host a special photo expedition meetup at one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders—the Ngorongoro Crater!

Whether you are a seasoned photographer or just love capturing the beauty of nature on your phone, this meetup is for you. Even though this might turn out to be a solo expedition, I am more than happy to connect, share tips, and chat with any fellow Local Guides who happen to be in the area or visiting the region! Let’s celebrate a decade of global friendships, mapping, and community together.

Location: Ngorongoro Crater ViewPoint, Google Maps

Activities Plan:

We will be spending a productive 4 hours exploring the crater’s edge and key viewpoints to capture its breathtaking morning essence.

  • 8:00 AM – 8:30 AM | Meet & Greet at the Viewpoint: We will gather at the designated lookout area to discuss our favorite Local Guides Connect memories, talk about landscape photography camera settings, and take a quick group/solo kickoff photo.

  • 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM | Landscape & Wildlife Photography Expedition: We will focus our lenses on the vast crater floor, tracking the movements of the wildlife below (zebras, wildebeests, and if we’re lucky, the rare black rhino) while utilizing the stunning morning light.

  • 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM | Mapping & High-Quality Photo Contributions: A core goal of our walk will be improving Google Maps. We will take high-quality, descriptive photos of the tourist viewpoints, informational signage, and tracking paths to update their visibility and accuracy on the map.

  • 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM | Connect Coffee & Wrap-up: We will wind down the expedition by reviewing our best shots, exchanging photography tips, and celebrating the 10th anniversary of Connect before concluding at noon.

What to Bring:

  • Your favorite camera gear (long telephoto lenses are highly recommended for the crater floor!) or a smartphone.

  • Binoculars.

  • Warm layers (mornings at the crater rim can be quite chilly!).

  • Your Local Guides spirit and passion for sharing the world!

If you are in the area or planning to visit Ngorongoro on the 26th, please RSVP and join me! Let’s make this historic milestone an unforgettable one.
