[In-Person] Ireland, February 16, Let's Celebrate 10 years of Local Guides in Ireland

My Dear Local Guides in Ireland,

I am very excited to host this meetup since it is a very special occasion. I believe most of you are aware that its 20th anniversary of Google Maps and 10th anniversary of our Local Guides program.
It is truly incredible to see how far we have come and how these programs are helping people and adding value to the lives of millions around the globe.
Let’s meetup and do what we do best (take photos, make quality map edits) to celebrate these momentous events together.

For this special event, I have decided to pick a very special location in Ireland, perhaps one of the gems in South East, The Dunmore East. Dunmore East is a popular tourist destination and one of Waterford’s most charming fishing villages. Dunmore East is the place to be whether you’re looking for a beach vacation, want to engage in some heart-pounding water sports, or just want to try some delicious seafood. The Dunmore East Coastal Walk was expanded in 2020 and now extends nearly 7km along the Waterford coast from the trailhead at the harbour parking lot to Ballymacaw Cove. For those with a moderate level of fitness, the first section, which includes steps and some undulations, is perfect. It takes walkers all the way to Portally Cove. The total distance of this linear walk is roughly 4 km. We will only attempt the 4km linear walk, but for those seeking a more strenuous walk that calls for a high level of fitness, the section beyond Portally Cove to Rathmoylan Cove and onto Ballymacaw Cove is nearly 15km round trip.

Here’s the program for the day:

Event : Photo Walk
Location : East Cliff walk, Dunmore East
Trail Length : 4kms to Portally Cove
Difficulty Level : Moderate
Weather Forecast : Sunny (9C)
What to bring : A camera/smartphone, snacks, (prepare for rain even though the forecast says otherwise, because we’re in Ireland eh)

On our way back, we can explore the beautiful town and help the Local business owners by putting their business on maps, and/or pushing updates.

I am really excited about this one and can’t wait to see you all.

Cheers

P.S. If you already contribute on maps but haven’t joined the Local Guides program yet, this is definitely the right time to do so. More info here.

Hi @OmerAli I’m currently living in Dublin and it would be a great opportunity to discover Ireland and at the same time contribute to improving Google Maps.

The place you are proposing seems lovely, but it is about 4 hours from Dublin. I was thinking of going with my partner on Saturday and spending the weekend there.

On the other hand, we can only get around by public transport, can you help us with this?

Thank you so much!!

Thank you for your answer @OmerAli :grinning:

What do you think is the best mode of transport to get to this place?

Do you know of a place where we can stay for one night?

Thanks for your help!

I would recommend the following:

  1. Train from Dublin Heuston to Waterford Plunkett (early mornings are always busy and sold out, so please book in advance)
  2. A short (8 min walk) from Plunket station to Bus Station (literally just on the other side of the bridge).
  3. Take bus 358 from the Bus Station that will take you directly into the heart of Dunmore Town. You can use your Leap card on this service, otherwise it may cost around €6 per person (one-way).
  4. There are some transit/Local Link services that run between Waterford and Dunmore, but they usually have limited shuttles and that’s why I wouldn’t recommend that.
  5. The fastest way is definitely by taxi, which usually takes between 18-25 mins and will set you back by €30 - 45
  6. Accommodations are very subjective, but I can recommend The Strand Inn because of its location, bar style food, views, and the friendly staff.
  7. Sometimes, you can find a cheaper hotel in Waterford or Tramore, should you prefer to travel back and forth.
  8. Finally, whilst in Dunmore, please try O’Sheas Fish n Chips. They open around 4:30 PM and are mostly sold out within the first hour.

I hope that helps.

@OmerAli Thanks again for all this help!!!
It is very useful and I am checking it out.
Can you tell me what the detailed plan would be for Sunday 16th, bearing in mind that I have to return to Dublin on the same day.

Thank you bhai, I am very excited for this event.
Many of my work colleagues have agreed to join the meetup and some of them are also going to join the Local Guides program, so that’s a win for me already

Thank you apu.
I really hope the same. I need to find some clever ways to build and maintain the Local Guides community here in Ireland ( I am mostly struggling to reach out to, but we’ll find a way).
I am going to set up a shared folders and hope to share all those pictures in the recap
