About Rashtrapati Bhavan:[1]
Rashtrapati Bhavan was conceptualized in 1911 after the decision to relocate the capital of British India from Kolkata to Delhi. Designed by celebrated architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, the structure represents a magnificent blend of Indian and Western architectural influences.
This iconic H-shaped building covers over 5 acres of land within a vast 330-acre estate. It houses 340 rooms, distributed across four floors, and features approximately 2.5 kilometers of corridors.
Construction commenced in 1912 and was completed in 1929, taking 17 years. Originally called the Viceroy’s House, it served as the residence of the British Viceroy. After India’s independence on August 15, 1947, it was renamed the Government House, and later, during the tenure of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, it received its current name, Rashtrapati Bhavan, marking its status as the home of the President of India.
