I need help with adjusting a pedestrian route on Google Maps. I am level 10, but I have never added or edited a road. I tried but it is quite confusing.
I visited Bratislava, Slovakia and I wanted to visit their famous UFO Tower. The problem was that you a river has to be crossed. The walking route recommended by Google Maps leads to the road on the bridge that is for cars only. There is a pedestrian walkway below the road that is not used when searching for the route.
There are plenty of tourists in Bratislava that visit this landmark as it is one of the top spots in the city so this modification would be very useful.
Can anyone guide me on how to make this edit? Is it possible to do it as a local guide? Or is it too advanced as it is a pedestrian road below a traditional car road?
This a problem I encounter often, it is a result of two things:
The properties of the road segments don’t contain enough information
The pedestrian network has not been fully or correctly mapped
There is, unfortunately, no longer any direct way to apply any information to a segment beyond it’s Type and Name, but ‘the system’ needs to know if pedestrians are allowed on a particular segment, and whether there is a sidewalk available on one or both sides of the road. To provide this information now all you can do is Report/Edit in the usual way, select the ‘Other’ category, then proceed to select the segments you wish to provide information for.
I can see that most of the pedestrian infrastructure in the area has been mapped already but I would also suggest looking around the wider vicinity to check for any pedestrian connection to local roads that have not been mapped. It is often the case that one tiny unmapped pedestrian connection can have big consequences for pedestrian directions . The unsafe situation you have discovered being a potential example, but I didn’t spot any obvious missing segments.
