Iconic London Landmarks on Maps #GoogleMapsIconChallenge

This post is a response to Google Maps Landmark Icons Challenge by @TusharSuradkar . I always love exploring different Maps features and I loved the idea of seeing the iconic places on Maps. Thank you Tushar for this fun challenge ! I was really curious to know the iconic landmarks on Maps for London,UK. The icons really enhance the look of the places on Maps and give the Map user or even a tourist new in the city what to expect when they wish to visit that place even before they see the photos of the same on Maps !

Here are the Iconic London landmarks on Maps :

  1. The British Museum
  2. St. Paul’s Cathedral
  3. Tower of London
  4. Big Ben
  5. Westminster Abbey
  6. Trafalgar Square
  7. London Eye
  8. Buckingham Palace
  9. Kensington Palace
  10. Trafalgar square

This Icon feature makes the city look so much interesting to explore and gives an idea of the most visited places in that city ! Another Maps feature which I really like is ‘My Maps’ and I often create Maps for me or friends as its fun to share your city’s cutomized Maps ! The best part is almost all the above mentioned places were already on my customized Maps named ‘Accessible tourist places in London’ which means they are accessible friendly too ! Yay !

Does your city also have this amazing Icons feature on Maps? Have you travelled to a different city and seen this feature to know the most visited iconic places in that city? Do let me know in the comments below !

P.S : If you want to create your own map , you can check this post.

Thank you @abhishekpatk !

Hi @Sophia_Cambodia , we need not make or create these icons on Maps. Whenever you open Maps for any city and zoom in to a particular area you wish to visit , the most popular tourist spot in that area (if any ) appears over there. You dont need to explicitely go andmake an icon. Hope this clears your doubt…

This is brilliant! It’s more like a one-stop travel planner. Check your location, see the icons on the maps and plan your tour for the day. Amazing. Thank you for sharing @Globe_trotter_Ish . I am lucky to have been able to visit most of these but a few. Looks like I need an excuse now to go back to London.

The best thing about the iconic maps is that by looking at the icon you can actually figure out what to expect to see. For example, the parliament house building in @TusharSuradkar 's post looks exactly like the one it is in reality. I love these icons. Sadly, not all the landmarks are showing with the icons yet unlike the one that Tushar shared.

Sure, if I go to London I will let you know. We can travel together- it will be fun. Looking forward to it. @Globe_trotter_Ish

That’s true @SoniaK

Sadly they decided to display a maximum of 10 icons as in the case of Delhi. whereas in places like Chicago I cannot see more than 4-5 places with icons.

I am exploring how to reach out to the Google Maps planning/development team to request them to add more icons and more cities like Pune to this list.

I totally agree @SoniaK , currently I guess only few iconic places of big cities have the Landmark icons on Maps. I love their resemblence with actual monuments or places worth visiting. They look like small soveniers on Maps !
