Iceland- Around the Country- A Road Trip

Visiting Iceland was a memorable experience and the country is full of so many things to do that its almost impossible to stay still.

I have traveled a lot in the past but this is my first time on a road trip around an entire country and it was an amazing experience.

Travelling in the Golden Circle (which is very not circular) is a great start to your trip and all the locations are driving distance from the capital of Iceland- Reykjavík. After that I combined tips from multiple articles on Iceland road trips and made my own plan. All useful links and my plan is available at the bottom of the article if you’re interested.

Now to the fun bit, I will simply add locations and photos with a short description if relevant and hope you enjoy them :slightly_smiling_face:

Gullfoss Falls - Waterfalls

Amazing place with a great view. You can walk along the waterfall. There is a cafe nearby which serve the BEST HOT CHOCOLATE in Iceland. Would definitely recommend.

Seljalandsfoss - Waterfalls

There are at least 3 waterfalls in walking distance and insider tip, go inside the cave at the last waterfall, it is absolutely amazing in there and you’re so close to the waterfall that the water splashes all over you.

Solheimasandur Plane Wreck

Caution: Its about a 40min walk so be prepared. There is a shuttle that can take you there but we decided to walk and were not very prepared. It is a very straight plane walk so not the most exiting thing to do and the wreckage is cool for photos but not much to look at so not the worst thing if you miss it.

Black Sand Beach- Vik

Geothermal Spas!!!

These were AMAZING, we spent over 2 hours on each bath. Such a relaxing experience!

Vök Baths is located next to a lake which was at the time covered in snow and going between the snow and warm water was a lot of fun.

Geosea is located by the ocean so the views from there are incredible (and they serve ice cream). Unfortunately the day we were there was very foggy so the pictures weren’t as good but i would still highly recommend visiting both of these baths.

Conclusion

I enjoyed this road trip so much that I would love repeating it during summer since I can only imagine how much better the views can be (Obviously looking at photos on Google Maps isn’t quite the same ;)).

Hope you enjoy this post and it motivates you to travel a bit more when the Corona virus crisis is over. And if there is something you’d like to know I’d be more than happy to help specially if its your first time travelling or going to a cold country.

Thank you for finishing this post and below are a few sections you might find useful.

General tips for Iceland

If you’re going in winter, monitoring roads can is advisable and the following link is a great way of doing so: https://www.road.is/ (includes details of road conditions, closure and more).

Carry winter boots or at the least trekking boots. You do not want to keep falling or have snow in your shoes. And this goes without saying but, carry lots of warm clothing spares. It was a lot colder than expected specially up north.

Food is very expensive in restaurants but very tasty so worth stopping by a good few times. A lot of places close early so a useful thing to do would be to always have extra food on you.

Hi @YK1001 @InaS @EmekaUlor , sorry for the spam tag but I just realized that I should have added this post to the “Local Stories” topic instead of the “Travel” topic.

As per https://www.localguidesconnect.com/t5/General-Discussion/How-to-change-the-topic-category-in-Local-Guides-Connects/m-p/68187 I was hoping one of you might be able to help me by moving this post to the Local Stories topic so that I can use it for my ConnectLive application?
Thank you :slightly_smiling_face:
