Attending Google Connect at Google headquarters in Mountain View in 2019 was one of the best experiences of my time as a Local Guide. 441 reviews. 7,858 photos. Years of contributing honestly to a platform I believed in.
What is happening in Thailand has changed everything.
The review
In March 2025, I posted an honest review of my experience. The co-working pods. The pool. The maintenance. The gap between what was promised and what was delivered.
The building’s own LEED scorecard records zero points for indoor air quality testing anywhere on the premises — the certification documentation supports everything I wrote.
On March 5, the business responded publicly:
“Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We always appreciate hearing from our community members and guests, as it helps us continue improving HOMA.”
What happened next
The following day — March 6 — they filed a criminal defamation complaint against me with Thai police.
There was no warning. No request to remove or amend the review. No conversation. One day, they thanked me for my review; the next day, they filed a criminal complaint.
The way I found out was being pulled off a departing airplane by Thai authorities. Arrest. A Thai jail. Hospitalization resulting from poor jail conditions. My passport was confiscated. A criminal hearing is scheduled for June 9, 2026. A potential two-year prison sentence.
All the above for a Google review.
My background
Green building has been my life’s work for twenty years.
The first residential LEED Gold remodel in the United States.
The first US remodel to receive ANSI/NGBS Emerald status.
Fourteen DOE Zero Energy Ready homes.
Years as a GBCI-approved educator teaching LEED and building codes to architects, engineers, and code officials. And, a Master of Real Estate Development from Arizona State University.

Philip Beere: Scaling up sustainable living
Sustainability is personal for me. I care about the air people breathe, the materials in the buildings they live in, social justice, and whether the green claims made to them are real.
Why I chose HOMA: the ‘green’ condo/hotel
HOMA Phuket Town held LEED Silver and IFC EDGE Advanced certification. For someone with my background, those credentials are not marketing — they are specific, verifiable commitments to indoor air quality, material standards, and building performance.
From January 2024 to January 2025, it was home. Premium rate paid. Twelve months. Every concern I raised went unaddressed.
No warning
The business said thank you. Then, they filed a criminal complaint.
Google never notified me. There was no process — no warning, no flag on my account, no message. Nothing between posting an honest review and being pulled off a plane. The hotel sent summons to two wrong addresses, including their own property, where I had checked out six months prior.
As a Local Guide, there should be protection and awareness that this is happening to contributors on this platform.

Note: What is happening to me has a name. A Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation — a SLAPP — is when a powerful party uses legal action not to seek justice but to silence a critic through the cost and fear of litigation. On May 25, 2026, the President of the Thai Supreme Court signed a new anti-SLAPP directive specifically recognizing this pattern. A Google review of a hotel stay should never result in criminal prosecution. That it did is the definition of a SLAPP.
