[Hybrid] India, June 14, 🌿 Save Our Wetlands: Chupi Wetlands, Purbasthali, West Bengal 🌿

The serene landscape of Chupi Wetland comes alive every year from early December as thousands of migratory birds arrive from distant lands. Nestled in Purbasthali, in the Purba Bardhaman district of West Bengal, this breathtaking ox-bow lake formed by the mighty Ganges stretches across nearly 9 km and covers about 3.5 sq. km of pristine wetland habitat.

Flowing gently past the villages of Chupi and Kasthashali, the crystal-clear waters and fertile alluvial plains create the perfect ecosystem for life to flourish. With over 230 species of resident and migratory birds, the wetland transforms into a paradise for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts. The surrounding orchards, farmlands, and vibrant greenery add to its ecological richness, while local country boats glide quietly across the water, guided by experienced boatmen who help visitors spot rare and beautiful birds.

Beyond its scenic beauty, Chupi Wetland plays a vital ecological role. The narrow channel connecting it to the Ganges ensures a steady source of water throughout the year. The fertile soil and generous rainfall sustain intensive agriculture in the region — maize, rice, mustard, jute, vegetables, fruits, and flowers thrive here, supporting countless livelihoods.

Today, this natural treasure needs our collective voice.
