Some places feel like a blend of serenity and sculpture — and Hathising (Hutheesing) Jain Temple in Ahmedabad is exactly that. It’s a perfect mix of spiritual calm and architectural brilliance.
I had been meaning to visit this place for quite some time, yet somehow, it kept slipping down my list. When I finally made it there, I instantly wished I had gone sooner. The moment you step inside, the intricate carvings, peaceful atmosphere, and quiet grace of the temple make you pause and simply admire.
Built in 1848 by the Hutheesing family, this heritage site carries not only religious importance but also a story of compassion and craftsmanship. It was commissioned by Hutheesing Kesarisinh, a wealthy Jain trader, during a severe famine in Gujarat. The idea wasn’t merely to build a temple but to provide employment to hundreds of skilled artisans for nearly two years — a noble way to blend faith with humanity.
Architecturally, the temple is a masterpiece. It combines the Maru-Gurjara temple style with Haveli-inspired elements, creating an exquisite balance of tradition and innovation. The white marble exterior glows under sunlight, with intricate carvings of floral motifs, dancers, and deities that showcase the unmatched artistry of its craftsmen. Inside, the main sanctum feels calm and meditative, with polished marble floors and beautifully detailed pillars that make every corner a visual delight.
Just outside the main temple stands the Manastambha, a grand 78-foot-high pillar inspired by the famous Kirti Stambha of Chittorgarh. It’s a symbol of dignity and devotion, adding both vertical grace and spiritual depth to the temple’s premises.
Today, the temple complex also houses a Bhojanalaya, where visitors can enjoy simple, pure vegetarian meals served at a very reasonable cost — yet another reflection of the Jain philosophy of community and compassion.
Visiting the Hutheesing Jain Temple isn’t just about seeing an old monument — it’s about experiencing a piece of living heritage. The place stands as a symbol of faith, philanthropy, and fine artistry, and for anyone visiting Ahmedabad, it deserves to be right at the top of the list.
