Hello, Local Guides! ![]()
I recently visited Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, with three of my seniors and one junior. Our trip began on October 7, 2026, and it became a memorable experience filled with beautiful beaches, a train journey, local food, cultural discoveries, and lots of fun with friends.
As university students, we wanted to explore as much as possible without spending too much money. During our trip, Google Maps became a helpful travel companion, especially when we needed to discover nearby places and find affordable food options.
What made the experience particularly interesting was using Ask Maps AI to explore our surroundings and find places that matched our needs. I would like to share how this feature fitted into our journey.
1. The Journey Began with a Train Ride
Getting train tickets was not easy. We had to put in considerable effort before finally securing our tickets and starting our journey.
The train ride was exciting, and we enjoyed the journey together. Since we were travelling at night, identifying the surrounding areas was sometimes difficult. We used Google Maps to check our approximate location and understand which areas we were passing through.
It was interesting to follow our journey on the map while travelling towards Cox’s Bazar. Instead of simply waiting to arrive, we could explore the surrounding geography and get a better idea of our route.
2. Arriving in Cox’s Bazar
We arrived at Cox’s Bazar Railway Station in the morning, around 10–11 AM. From there, we took an auto-rickshaw to our Water view Resort.
We had chosen budget-friendly accommodation because we were students and wanted to keep our travel expenses manageable. Fortunately, our resort was conveniently located near the beach, including Laboni Beach and Sugandha Beach.
After checking in and settling down, we headed to the beach. We enjoyed swimming, taking photographs, and participating in some beach activities.
The best part was that we could spend more time enjoying the beach without travelling long distances from our accommodation.
3. Discovering Nearby Places with Google Maps Ask AI
One of the most useful parts of our trip was finding places around us.
When travelling somewhere unfamiliar, it can be difficult to know which places are worth visiting, where to eat, or which nearby options suit your budget.
We used Google Maps to explore our surroundings and look for nearby places. The Ask AI feature was particularly relevant to our interest in discovering places based on what we needed.
Rather than searching randomly, we wanted to make more informed decisions about where to go and what options were available nearby.
For us, this was especially important because we were travelling as students on a limited budget. We wanted to enjoy our trip without unnecessary expenses.
The experience reminded me that maps are not just about reaching a destination. They can also help us discover places and make better decisions while exploring an unfamiliar area.
4. Finding Affordable Food During Our Trip
Food was another important part of our travel planning.
After spending time at the beach, we needed to find somewhere to eat. We wanted good food at reasonable prices rather than expensive restaurants.
We explored nearby food options using Google Maps and checked the available information to help us decide where to go.
This made the process easier because we could review places around us before choosing where to eat. For budget-conscious travellers, knowing what options are nearby can save both time and unnecessary transportation costs.
We also enjoyed simple snacks with friends during our evening outing. Sometimes, these small moments become some of the best memories of our Tour.
5. A Peaceful Evening Around Marine Drive
Later that evening, we visited a quiet spot around Marine Drive.
We spent time chatting, sharing stories, and enjoying snacks together. It was a relaxing break after a day of exploring the beach.
Not every memorable travel experience needs to involve a famous tourist attraction. Sometimes, a peaceful place and good company are enough to make an evening special.
Exploring unfamiliar areas becomes easier when we can check locations and nearby places on Google Maps.
6. 2nd day we Exploring Maheshkhali Island
The following day, we travelled to Maheshkhali Island.
The boat journey itself was an adventure. We enjoyed the river scenery and the experience of travelling across the water. The water level and conditions were different on our return journey, which made the experience even more memorable.
After reaching Maheshkhali, we explored Buddhist religious sites, took photographs, and visited places around the island.
We also observed how dried fish is prepared and learned a little about this local activity. It was fascinating to see a different side of the region beyond the beaches of Cox’s Bazar.
One of the highlights was visiting a Buddhist temple and a Buddhist monastery. The surroundings, architecture, and peaceful atmosphere made the visit worthwhile.
This part of the trip reminded me how valuable it is to explore local culture and traditions when visiting a new destination.
7. A Local Food Stop in Maheshkhali
During our visit to Maheshkhali, we also stopped at a local biryani house near the Buddhist temple area.
We do not remember the exact name of the restaurant, but having a meal there became another part of our travel experience.
As budget-conscious students, we appreciated finding local food options while exploring the island. We could take a break, eat together, and continue our journey.
This is one reason why discovering nearby places can be useful when travelling. Even an ordinary food stop can become a memorable part of a trip.
8. Returning to Laboni Beach
After exploring Maheshkhali, we returned to Cox’s Bazar and visited Laboni Beach again.
We enjoyed the beach atmosphere, took more photographs, and spent some final moments together before preparing for our return journey.
We had arranged to keep our bags in a car, which allowed us to explore more comfortably before leaving.
Watching the sunset over the sea was one of the most beautiful moments of the trip. The warm colors of the sky and the sound of the waves created a memorable ending to our coastal adventure.
Later, we returned to Cox’s Bazar Railway Station and boarded our train home.
What This Trip Taught Me About Google Maps Ask AI
This journey helped me appreciate how useful digital maps can be when exploring an unfamiliar destination.
Here are some ways Google Maps supported our travel experience:
- Discovering nearby places: Exploring locations around us helped us understand what was available in the surrounding area.
- Finding food options: Checking nearby restaurants helped us compare options and choose places that suited our budget.
- Understanding our surroundings: The map helped us follow our approximate location during the train journey and while travelling around the destination.
- Planning local travel: Knowing where places were located helped us make more informed transportation decisions.
- Exploring beyond popular attractions: We could look beyond the main beach areas and discover local cultural experiences.
Ask Maps is an interesting development in how people interact with maps because it offers a more conversational way to explore places. However, the usefulness of any recommendation depends on the information available, and it is always sensible to verify important details such as prices, opening hours, and current conditions.
For me, the biggest lesson was that technology can make travel planning easier while leaving more time for the experiences that matter.
Why Local Guides Contributions Matter
As a Google Maps user, I also appreciate the contributions of the Local Guides community.
Photos, reviews, ratings, and accurate place information can help travellers discover places they might otherwise overlook. When people share their genuine experiences, they make it easier for others to explore unfamiliar destinations with greater confidence.
Our trip reminded me that every useful contribution can make a difference, whether it is a photograph of a local attraction, an honest restaurant review, or updated information about a place.
I hope to continue exploring new places and contributing useful information to Google Maps so that other travellers can benefit from these experiences too.
