How to: travel like a BOSS with Google Maps

Local Guide StephenLammens' google maps favorites for Madeira.

Traveling is like doing sports—the more you do it, the better you get at it.

Over the past years I have traveled to 25 countries. Over those years I have developed a certain strategy for me to visit as many things as possible without having to rush and plan too much.

And today, I will share that strategy with you! :hugs:

You might have seen some of my travel blog posts about Madeira, or Istanbul where I guide you around the places I travel to. You will be doing the same soon!

As for the strategy, there are just 3 simple steps. Research, Mapping, Explore.

1. Research

Ofcourse, it all starts with research. Everyone has different interests, and you should tweak how you research according to that. Personally, when I travel, I want to have a good mix between hotspots and hidden gems.

There are 2 types of research needed before you travel:

Places to visit

I usually Google the following keywords to get to define my places to visit:

“Best places to visit in -destination-”

“Best places to visit in -destination- like a local”

“Hidden gems to visit in -destination-”

Places to eat

I usually Google the following keywords to get to define my places to eat:

“Best places to eat in -destination-”

“Best places to eat in -destination- like a local”

“Hidden gems food places in -destination-”

What I usually do for the places to eat, is to skip the first page on Google and go to the second page and further.

Why? The biggest blogs are covered on the first page, and a lot of times restaurants are paying those influencers money to have them something write about them. What you need are the honest bloggers (preferably locals), not getting paid for it. They will give you the most valuable information!

2. Mapping

You do this step simultaneously when you are searching for the places in step 1.

The trick here is to be consistent in the list type that you use for types of places.

The better you do your prep here, the easier it gets to write reviews after as well!

For example, here is my legenda for my Maps:

Heart - Activities / Places to visit

Star - Places to eat

Flag - Important places: hotel, airbnb,…

3. Explore

Many people lose themselves planning too much and lose the enjoyment this way.

But here comes the interesting part. The better you do your Maps arrangement, the easier it gets when you are at your destination!

This was my prep before Madeira:

I had a car in Madeira. All I did was taking the car and cover for certain areas my “hearts”, which are the things to do. If I was hungry, I always had restaurants in each area covered so I did not lose time there searching for one!

Here is an example of what I did during my week trip. This way I was certain that I could visit everything.

I really hope that this will help you in the future, if it does please let me know!

Another golden tip, if you know that you will not have mobile internet at your destination. Download the map offline beforehand! This way, you will still be able to use Google Maps and navigate between the places, even without mobile internet.

Stay safe,

Stephen

I am very glad that you like it @sweetnovember99 , hope that you will use it in the future.

Great post @Stphn and seeing the result, the upfront time investment looks really worth doing! I especially like the fact that you mention not to overplan it as that could definitely kill (part of) the fun.

Thanks a lot @JanVanHaver ! Indeed, the better your prep is, the more relaxed you are when you actually travel.

Totally worth it!

Thank you so much @NareshDarji !

Now, this is great! Personally, I do all of these except; “create a Map”, can you share with me how to do that? @Stphn

Interesting post and title by the way.

Thanks a lot @Ewaade_3A ! Great to see that you are doing the most of it.

Could you specify your question a bit more please? Are you in the 2. Mapping or 3. Explore section?

Mapping, I don’t know how to create that type of Map, @Globe_trotter_Ish once shared this, but I guess I never got a hang of it, how to do my own map. @Stphn

Oooooh this you mean @Ewaade_3A ! This is actually pretty easy, these are basically lists.

You have 3 general lists that are standard in Google Maps, which are “Favorites”, “Want to go” and “Starred places”.

Unfortunately, you cannot edit the icon nor the description of it. You can add lists, but they would all have the blue icon as you can see below.

There are many ideas already posted in the Idea Exchange to optimize it but no luck yet…

I would love to create like 10 different ones and rename them and have different icons for that. For example like: restaurants, bars, museums, hotel, cultural things,…

You would be able to open Maps and see at a glimpse what is close to you. It would make traveling a lot easier!

Though, I just categorize everything with the 3 types of lists that I have like this:

  • Favorites: Cultural, museums, viewpoints,…
  • Want to go: Important places such as your hotel / Airbnb
  • Starred places: Bars & restaurants

So step-by-step to add something to a list it would be looking like this (it is desktop version but works the same on mobile):

  1. Search for the place that you want to visit

  2. Click on save

  1. Choose the list that you want to save it to

  1. Et voilà!

If you would like to see the places in your list, you can go to “My places” in the menu of Google Maps.

Hope that helps!

Oh! thank you so much! I really do appreciate, I add things to my list, but I have never visited “my places”, I guess that’s why I have never seen it this way. It was the way I remembered I added an Art Gallery and was able to visit the Thought Pyramid Art Centre.

I added the places before going to Abuja.

I will do more of it now, thank you so much. @Stphn

I got a similar help from @plavarda and @ErmesT on how not to exceed the 1000 photo limit. I like when people go out of their way to teach me stuffs; in a step-by-step tutorial.

I am very glad I could help you @Ewaade_3A !

We are all a big family here. :hugs:

Nice art gallery that you have visited by the way!

Thank you, I always visit Art Galleries, my love for Art is inexplicable!

I wrote about that because, I found it; searching through the “things I added to my map” before travelling and because I was very low in Spirit, which is quite unlike me as you must have come to know. :grinning: @Stphn

If I share all of my travelling stories, hmmmmm. There are many of them.

Great to hear, @Ewaade_3A ! I also love art. Museums are always on my list when I travel.

Hahaha yes. Share your travel stories more, keep 'em coming!

I shared the travel stories of my last 2 trips, but more as a guide.

You can check them at “A complete guide to Istanbul: Getting around, things to do, where to eat” & “A complete guide to Madeira: Getting around, best hikes, food and activities”.

Thank you for tagging @Ewaade_3A ! Yes, I did create Maps using the ‘My Maps’ feature for one of my meet-ups as I love the feature. @Stphn Thanks for sharing this amazing post with us ! Its really informative. The one about which Ewaade is talking about is the map I had created to Map music instruments around the world , which I had presented during one of the Local Guides meet-ups last year. Here is the article link. Thanks !
