Ditch the resorts and experience the vast richness of Jamaica’s culture. Well, at least that is what I did.
Many visitors are wary of the island based on stories that are shared in the media, what if I told you, that you can have a million dollar experience for half the price?
Here’s how. Instead of booking a hotel try an Airbnb. Always read the reviews and book with a verified host. Try to visit the less touristy places, I would recommend the following towns:
Port Antonio,
Treasure Beach
Falmouth
or St Mary.
The fewer tourists around, the fewer hustlers you will find. ( Basic Reasoning)
Taxis/ Buses/ Car Rentals
There are taxis on every corner, always try to get two or three taxi drivers number in case you would like
to take the hassle out of traveling. Always negotiate price no matter what, and always act like you have less money than you do. Taxi drivers are notorious for price gouging. For long distances I suggest the Knutsford express, always book a day in advance and show up at least 45 minutes early for boarding.
Nature tours. There are many undiscovered spots on the island, do join a local travel group on Facebook to see some of the local spots that are way more beautiful than the overly hyped up tourist spots and are often little or no money to visit. I would suggest www.facebook.com/backpackingjamaica for tips on where to visit, or even to hitch a ride with another traveler.
Everyone basically will try to sell you [redacted], if you are not interested to say no thank you politely. The locals will be there for you through thick and thin if you show them respect. Also,
stand your ground. It is a much rougher culture than what first world people are accustomed to.
Enjoy the vibe and ask about local parties and celebrations and while you are at it, try to make a friend or two and share some memories over a red stripe.
Have an open mind, and do your research.
