What is the process for adding or renaming a road so that the edit gets accepted in Google Maps?
I’ve submitted several road edits, but some of them were rejected. I’m unable to figure out the reason behind the rejections.
Can anyone with experience in road editing or map moderation help me understand what I’m doing wrong and share some best practices for getting these edits approved?
Hi @SundiVlogs To the best of my knowledge, when you submit a road edit, it does not go live immediately. The Google Maps road editing team reviews the submission; if they deem the edit accurate, reliable, and supported by sufficient evidence, it is approved—otherwise, it is rejected.
When it comes to adding or changing a road name, simply making a suggestion is not enough. You must provide a valid official document confirming the name so that the Google support team can verify it as the road’s actual, official designation.
Google Maps Product Experts can assist you in such cases. You should post your issue or request in the Google Maps support & tag @NareshDarji bhai (Connect Moderator & Product Expert). The road name can be updated on Google Maps only if all the necessary documents and evidence are found to be valid.

You can suggest adding a missing road or correcting a road name directly through Google Maps. Since Google reviews all edits to ensure accuracy, it can take a few days for your changes to appear publicly.
- Navigate to the Edit Menu
Open the Google Maps app. Tap the Contribute tab at the bottom of your screen, then select Edit map. (On a computer, click the menu icon and select Edit the map). - Select the Road Option
Tap Add or fix a road from the list of edit types. - Choose Your Action
Select Missing road if you need to draw a new street, or Road name if you are correcting an existing one. - Trace or Select the Location
To add: Move the map to align the crosshairs and tap to draw the road segment by segment.
To rename: Simply tap the existing road segment on the map that needs correction. - Submit for Review
Type in the correct name in the provided text field. You can also add an optional note to help the review team verify the change. Tap Submit.

Simply dont rename roads. And dont put names when you add new ones.

this is Marco from Italy with “some” experience into adding / editing Roads in Google Maps.
I saw that you already have 9 added roads into your “Contribution” This is good but you already started to face some “small problems”…
but let me thank @MortenCopenhagen for tagging me!
I have some advice on roades and also one about photos.
ROADS
- To avoid rejection draw SHORT roads in a clear high contrast environment. A nice black asphalt roads on a green grass will be approved really fast. A dirt road in the desert… well, 99% rejected
- You will have more chances to be approved if you connect two roads, rather then create a dead road. (even if I do not agree with this )
- if you EDIT a road you’ll have low chances that will be approved. Leave as they are, there is so much work to do..
- Shadow, trees, bushes… I’m sure you tried to connect two clearly visible roads even if in the middle there was the shadow of a tree or the raod was under a canopy. Really difficult
I do remember that someone wrote also about the “possibility” that Google Maps gave us a sort of “trust level”. I never understood if it was real but, also for me, with more than 135.000 roads added, lots of roads are rejected and the approval period is always looooooong.
So, my suggestion, focus on clear roads and add short - short - roads focusing on a specific area.
PHOTOS
I use to look at the “contributions” list as well as some photos before replay and I saw that your photos are breaking rules.
They could be deleted at any time. So, if you use google maps as a personal “photo gallery” be prepared to loose all your photos.
