While adding missing places on Google Maps, I often face difficulty in assigning a category to that place. I don’t see enough options. Additionally the Categories need to cater for the local requirements (maybe with a nearest possible English translation in brackets). Today I saw a beautiful village called Jaglot in Gilgit-baltistan, located near the juncture of three major mountain ranges (namely Himalaya, Karakorum & Hinduraj). But this village was added under the category of a ‘Cultivation’ !
I wish to know whether there is a place where I can see & go through a full list of available Category options…
Is it possible for us to apply for addition of new Categories if we feel a need for this?
@GhazalaShah as far as I know Local Guides program does not publish a list of all categories for Maps. There could be a list available from the Google My Business program, but am not entirely sure.
For us, we should select the nearest category that would best describe the location. If we cannot find a suitable one (or cannot find a general one that describes the location), then, it could mean that Local Guides cannot add that location to Maps. For example, as Local Guides, we cannot directly add geo-political, water features, transportation etc, such as towns, cities, borders, rivers, lakes, bus stops, train stations etc. For these, we need to use the Send Feedback menu in Maps.
If there are actual locations that you find some more specific categories are needed, ie the general category is there, but you need a more specific one that you think will be helpful, then write a suggestion in Idea Exchange.
On Google Maps you can choose the following categories to add a place as a Local Guide:
Lodging, Restaurant, School, Cafe, Shopping Mall, Bar, Grocery, Clothing, Home goods store, Electronics store, Hospital, Bank, Supermarket, Gym, Doctor, Gas Station, ATM, Corporate office, Pharmacy, Hotel, Museum, Movie Theatre, Night club. They are visible also when you enter your account on Google maps, click the menu options and then “add a missing place” > category and then scroll down.
If you would like to suggest to add more categories, you can create a post and share it in the Idea Exchange section like @StephenAbraham suggested yo you. You can use the Send feedback option to report the wrong category of a place.
If you would like to participate as a business you can sign up in the Google My Business portal and then, you will be able to add or edit categories. I hope these details will help you.

What I have noticed about categories is that some of them are not available on android and those not available on android you can find them on desktop or PC, meaning that you will need to use your computer to make changes or to add that particular place which have a category that does not appear on android. I’m an Italian local guide and I’ve reached the 8th level but sometimes I got troubles adding some new places because I’m not sure what kind of place type it’s more… Appropriate.
Do you know if there’s a site where i can have a list of all places types?
And if possible, also that translated list in other languages…
You have asked a very good and relevant question. I take that you by type means category.
I really would love to find a complete list with some relevant notes associated with each category. I hope the moderators on Monday will point us to such a list.
In the meantime I can recommend this website where you you can download current lists of categories after selecting the language you prefer. Also please note that the US list is the primary and all others are translated and adopted from the US list.
