Hi everyone,
My name is Farhan Shabir. I want to discuss a common issue: 1-star reviews that use masked profanity to bypass Google’s filters.
Recently, I saw a negative review where a frustrated customer called a restaurant’s food “hammered isht.” While constructive criticism is completely fine, using “isht” is a deliberate phonetic misspelling of a swear word.
According to Google’s Offensive Content Policy, disguised vulgarity is strictly prohibited. However, automated bots often miss these hidden words, leaving policy-breaking reviews active.
I’d love to know your thoughts:
-
When flagging disguised profanity, which report category works best for you?
-
If Google’s automated system rejects the initial flag, what is the fastest way to escalate it to a human moderator for removal?
Looking forward to your advice!
Best regards,
Farhan Shabir
Hello @fanikhan
The first thing is, welcome to local guides connect forum. It’s the official hub of local guides who voluntarily improve Google maps. Please feel free to officially introduce yourself on Introduce Yourself — June 2026.
Thanks for the observation. I think profanity on the maps goes with the same report. As long as you realise or notice it’s profanity in one form or the other please feel free to report it using the three dots on the top right hand corner of the review.
Click and it gives -Report Review
- Off Topic
- Spam
- Conflict of interest
- Profanity…
You can share with connect moderators as well as Googlers here to escalate the local guide and profile privately.
That’s my suggestion. See you around.
Happy guiding
Cheers
Hey Farhan, welcome to the community! For those masked swear words, I usually just go with the offensive content category when reporting. For your second question, you actually can’t escalate rejected flags here on Connect. You’ll need to post about it over on the official Google Maps Help Community. The product experts there have the ability to review those rejected flags and escalate them directly to the maps team for a manual human review. Hope they get it sorted out for you!
where are the connect moderators @SholaIB
You’re talking to one here @fanikhan
Please share the profile with me on a PM.
Thanks
