Here in Israel, a lot of places are named in Hebrew. Sometimes I can add an English name as well, and sometimes the field isn’t available.
Does anyone know why it’s inconsistent?
2, Does anyone know how to enable the addition of an English name?
I thought the name had to appear only in Hebrew first in order to ‘unlock’ the English name field, but you can see in this example below that it doesn’t seem to be the case… I would appreciate any help on this.
This is a brilliant question, @TalBenisty . And one that the team needs to take an extra look at if you ask me.
I live in Denmark where we speak Danish. I have set my Android to English. When I then start Suggesting an edit I will normally get two name fields English and Danish. I can then add or edit as needed.
If only the English name exist there will only be one name field visible = the English one. If only the Danish exist I will see the both name fields. But the only way to know which one is which is to delete one of them. Only an empty field will let us know which language is which. This is a big bug if you ask me. Plenty of room for improvements here.
If I then want to add the Danish name (when the Danish name field is missing in the App) I need to go to my desktop where I have bookmarked two versions of Google Maps one for each language. This is far from optimal.
Recently we learned that the app will soon have an easier way to switch between languages in the App. I hope this will eliminate the problems we currently face.
On desktop that is quite easy @TalBenisty : there is an option in the main menu of Maps to switch the language. Just click the burger menu icon in the top left and towards the bottom of the list you will see the item ‘Language’.
On mobile devices it is more difficult, as you need to switch the language settings of the entire phone.
One more thing which is quite important here on the forum: if you want to make sure that another Connect user sees a reply you give, make sure to ‘tag’ them by typing the ‘@’ symbol and then select that user from the list (or start typing the name if there is no list).
Here too, some persons have mixed up the place names.
In the field meant for Marathi, I find text in English.
Then, I do not get a place to add Marathi text.
However, I use two handsets. One has English as default & another one Marathi as default.
So when I open the place for editing on a handset with English as default, I see the Marathi placeholder first & another empty placeholder for English. I transfer the English name to its assigned place & then add the Marathi translation.
But, on a desktop, that becomes easier as we can have two tabs set in two different languages.
So you make them kind of simultaneously? I normally do single edits only. That might be the problem. And when the place is claimed is can be very difficult.
I will do some more testing now. Thanks a million.

I also wanted to let you know that I removed the language tag from your post since you wrote in English and the tag should only reflect the language of the post. In the following page you can read more about it: How do I find posts in my preferred language?
