How to Add Caption to Photos in Google Maps

I uploaded a photo to a place in Google Maps and was greeted with this message:

I was never given a chance to add a caption the way it does when adding photos along with a review.

How do I go back to the uploaded photo and add a caption?

Any help is appreciated.

Notes:

  1. I found this discussion which is 4 years old and has no accepted solution.

  2. I am using a desktop computer with Windows and Chrome browser.

Adding a caption on a photo is always possible on Android, @TusharSuradkar .

From “Your profile” click on “See all photos”, then scroll down to the photo where you want to add the caption.

  • Tap on “Add a caption”
  • Type your caption
  • Send it

Everything seems to be simple, and it was, but …

But there is an issue, that’s the reason why I am tagging @KlaudiyaG here: The caption was not saved! Reopening the photo, I was again at the point number 1

EDIT: As indicated by @C_T , the caption appear after hours

Thank you @ErmesT for your attention and for looking into the challenge.

Thank you for the lovely step-wise illustration.

I further read that the caption is not actually sent.

Should I wait for some time to get it synced with the photo or something like that?

I have read the same conclusion in the discussion that I mentioned in my post.

Hello @TusharSuradkar

It appears you missed the points which I mentioned in two of my recent posts on “benefits of captioning”.

There I explained in detail the deterrents which one faces while doing the exercise post facto. Non-visibility of the caption on submitting is one of them.

Nevertheless, once you add a caption, syncing that with server takes a lot of time. That may be more than a day, sometimes.

But, once you include, be assured that the caption is there and will be visible later.

I updated captions in around 1.9K photos and then further used those to detect the private photos. That saved me from the painful task of comparing public and private profiles side by side.

Thanks @C_T for the insight.

I guessed so - waiting for it to sync worked!

I checked back after almost 12 hrs now and the caption is seen on the photo.

I saw your article the other day about the benefits of captioning and bookmarked to be read in peace later.

Now is the time too through it thoroughly.

Thanks again to @ErmesT for the steps to follow.

Hi @ErmesT and @C_T

I believe that you missed an important point in the original question by @TusharSuradkar and this is, his note 2 where he clearly states that he is using a desktop computer with Windows and Chrome browser.

Notwithstanding, @C_T is correct in that there is “a considerable delay” when doing this by the method prescribed by @ErmesT and this delay is unfortunate as it gives the false impression that the caption is not saved and so the unaware and soon to become very frustrated user would try again, and again but to no avail. The persistent and still existent problem with adding/editing captions and the benefits lost because of this are well documented (see my post here) and as @TusharSuradkar has pointed out, goes back as far as 4 years !!! I do hope that now that @ErmesT has escalated this problem that it might get some attention.

That’s correct @AdamGT

I am using a desktop computer, but any method that allows me to caption is welcome.

This gives rise to many questions:

  1. Why is there no equivalent feature for the web/desktop for captioning?

  2. Why does adding photo behaves differently when done as part of a review and when done directly?

  3. Why does it take so much time for attaching a caption to a photo, to the point that a user concludes it is probably not working.

  4. Why is there no prompt or message saying “Thanks for adding a caption. This may take up to 24 hrs to update.”

I think these queries can be addressed by a moderator.

I’m not able to caption uploaded photos using my iPhone. Not sure why.

I’m wondering what the status of your captioning experience on desktop is @TusharSuradkar

Hi @mariventure and thank you for reaching out to us.

When you want to add caption to already uploaded photos first you have to choose to exact photo you want → click on the three dots → click on the “Edit caption” option.

When you click on it the option it will available and you can start writing.

When you are ready with the caption don’t forget to click “Post” and you caption will be visible on your photo.

I hope that this information will help you,

Thanks for wonderful sharing @TusharSuradkar bhau.

I was trying exacatly that in the Ios app and the only option given when I click on the three dots is to delete the picture. But I think it comes from the fact that I uploaded the photos to my business site and now they are on google maps as well. Now because the account that uploaded the picture is named like my business, I can’t edit the caption becaues I don’t own the photo.

However the Buisiness account is managed through my normal google account, and I can perform actions but I don’t know how I would even log into the business account.

I see this is a few years old. As of 2024, I still don’t see a way to do this on a windows laptop. I also added descriptions of food items on my phone, but I have 0 points in the “Captions” category. Is this different? Thanks!
