How my family spent 4 days in Colombo Sri Lanka

We took a trip to Sri Lanka to honour a remarkable milestone – my grandmother’s 90th birthday! We were in Colombo for only four days. Our plan was…to catch up with family bonding and fully immerse ourselves in the lively culture of Colombo. Sri Lanka kickstarted our holiday, with Kuala Lumpur eagerly awaiting our next stop on this exciting journey.

Day 1:

Our journey begins with a lively ride through Colombo’s bustling streets aboard a Tuk Tuk, in my opinion, the best way to experience Colombo. Embrace the vibrant sounds and sights as we zip through the city, making our way to the iconic Central Perk Bistro.

The Central Perk Bistro in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is a charming establishment that captures the essence of the iconic Central Perk cafe from the television show “Friends.” Situated in the city’s heart, this bistro offers a cozy and inviting atmosphere where patrons can relax and unwind. The decor is reminiscent of the beloved sitcom, featuring quirky furnishings and nostalgic memorabilia that evoke a sense of nostalgia for fans of the show. Whether you’re looking for a hearty meal, a refreshing drink, or simply a place to enjoy good company, The Central Perk Bistro provides a warm and welcoming experience that keeps customers coming back for more.

Day 2:

Just before we gathered for Grandma’s big celebration, we ventured to the Colombo National Museum for an enriching cultural experience. We wanted the kids to learn about their cultural heritage.

The Colombo National Museum was founded in 1877, this grand institution houses Sri Lanka’s illustrious history and artistic legacy. From ancient artifacts to fine art masterpieces, the museum offers a captivating journey through time, providing insights into the island’s rich heritage.

The cost of entry is Rs 600 for children under 12 and Rs 1200 for adults, please note these foreign prices.

Day 3:

After the excitement and a big night celebrating Grandma’s 90th, we took it easier and visited Independence Square.

Independence Square, located in the heart of Colombo, Sri Lanka, is a significant historical landmark symbolising the country’s journey to independence from British colonial rule. This beautifully landscaped square features a striking Independence Memorial Hall, designed by renowned architect Tom Neville Wynne-Jones, which is a tribute to Sri Lanka’s freedom fighters and their sacrifices. Surrounded by lush greenery and picturesque walkways, the square serves as a popular recreational spot for locals and tourists alike, offering a tranquil oasis amidst the bustling city. Visitors can explore the memorial hall, stroll through the serene gardens, and reflect on the nation’s rich history and cultural heritage. With its blend of architectural beauty and historical significance, Independence Square is a proud symbol of Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and resilience. With no entry fee, it’s the perfect spot to soak in the tranquil beauty of Colombo.

Day 4:

Before bidding farewell to Colombo, we explored two must-visit destinations – Gangaramaya Temple and Galle Face Greens.

Discover the spiritual splendour of Gangaramaya Temple, adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant paintings. Gangaramaya Temple is a revered Buddhist temple renowned for its architectural splendour and cultural significance. Founded in the 19th century by the Venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera, it has evolved into a vibrant spiritual centre attracting devotees and visitors from around the world. The temple complex features a stunning array of structures, including a main shrine hall adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant paintings, and a museum showcasing religious artifacts and historical relics. Gangaramaya Temple also hosts various religious ceremonies, festivals, and charitable activities, serving as a hub for spiritual practice and community engagement. With its blend of architectural beauty, religious devotion, and cultural heritage, Gangaramaya Temple is a cherished symbol of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and a must-visit destination for travellers seeking spiritual enlightenment and cultural immersion.

Then, head to Galle Face Greens for a scenic stroll along the coastline, sampling delicious street food and soaking in breathtaking sunset views over the Indian Ocean.

Galle Face Green, located along the scenic coastline of Colombo, Sri Lanka, is a sprawling urban park beloved by locals and tourists alike. Stretching for half a kilometre, this iconic green space offers breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and is a popular recreational spot for strolls, picnics, and outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy a refreshing sea breeze while taking in the sights and sounds of this vibrant city hub. The promenade is dotted with food stalls offering a variety of local snacks and refreshments, making it an ideal spot for sampling Sri Lankan street food. At sunset, Galle Face Green comes alive with locals and visitors gathering to witness the stunning spectacle of the sun sinking into the horizon, casting a golden glow over the ocean. With its scenic beauty, cultural vibrancy, and relaxed atmosphere, Galle Face Green embodies the essence of Colombo’s coastal charm and is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the city.’
