How I use my Underwater equipment to take Marine life photos

Hi everyone,
I uploaded a post a while ago with a few of my photos from Eilat’s coral reefs in Israel and got some questions about what equipment I use and how I take those images.

I am a certified SSI pro Divemaster.
I dive since I can remember my self and am a certified scuba diver since 2008.
I love diving in the Red sea and I visited other places as well (the Great barrier reef, Thailand, India, Greece and more)
Taking photos of marine life is one of my favorite hobbies!
I like taking photos whenever I can, Freediving or Scuba diving.

You can see in my photos that I normally prefer the natural light and this means that most of the images are taken in the shallow water up to 10 meters depth.
It is easier to take photos while scuba diving because you have much more time to plan and wait for the right moment and you are more relaxed although sometimes Freediving gives you the freedom to stay on one place for hours without the need to change your air supply and without the need to carry the whole scuba unit.

what equipment do I use?

I use different things, depends on the location, how much time I got or what I could bring with me.
Like I mentioned before I am using mostly natural lights so I won’t mention the flashlights that I use for fill light once in a while because I don’t see it as my camera equipment and they are just normal (although strong) white diving flashlights.

  • Canon G7x (mark 1 the old version)
This is my main camera and I use it only for diving (My “dive camera”).
I love it and it produces RAW images that hold a lot of information for post editing.
I do recommend getting a newer version but this works fine for me
I got it back in 2017
  • Meikon underwater housing (compatible for my G7x camera)
I searched a lot for an Underwater housing and read many reviews.
Most housing’s I saw where very expensive and had many lens options and other features.
I decided I prefer going with a lower budget and buying the Meikon housing.
Today I am very happy with my choice and I trust the housing very much.
I never found a need to change the lens for this housing or had any other problems with it.
  • Gopro camera (I had a few versions: Hero1, Hero3Black, Hero4Silver)
My secondary camera that I take to flight’s (if its not a diving trip) or give to other people that dive with me.
It is the easiest way to take photos underwater while compromising with the quality of the image.
The other problem I had with the older versions is that they didn’t had a screen so it was more like “gambling” every time and I never knew if I got the photo or if it was blurry. My fix to this problem is to take as many images that I can and then choosing the good once later.
  • Photoshop Lightroom (Editing software by Adobe)
As a photographer I use Lightroom for almost every photo I take. Normally “on land” it will be a raw photo from one of my DSLR’s and when “Underwater” its from my “dive camera”.
What is most importent to do in the post editing stage is to white balance the image and try to bring back as much as you can of the red color that got lost in the depth. Sometimes when it is deeper than 10 meters there is no red color to bring back and then you got to “work it out” and either use a light while taking the photo or just let the blue color control your image and make the best out of it.
There is no magic trick or any special advice about how to edit the colors and every depth is different (even 1 meter changes a lot).

Hope I gave you some Explanation about it and I am open for questions whenever you want

Hey @JoniG ,

Thanks for sharing so many useful tips!

Personally I am a huge fan of diving and enjoy looking at documentaries about the underwater world. I’ve dived only once in my life, but it was an experience I will never forget.

@SilvyC , thank you very much for tagging me here.

@JoniG , I’m a PADI open water diver. Getting ready for the advanced licence as I need to explore the shipwrecks around the Island. Most of the good wrack sites are above 20m deep here. I mainly use GoPro cameras(GoPro 7 and 5). That does a pretty good job for now. I checked out the Canon G7 x from your post and it seems a solid cam for underwater photos. Will definitely consider when I’m going for an upgrade from Gopros. Thank you for sharing this very useful information from your experience.

Hey @SilvyC thanx a lot!
And thanx for tagging @ravindus

The wrecks are normally over 20 meters (Bottom) and I don’t know a lot of shallow wrecks.
I really recommend learning and getting more dive certifications for your safety and so you can explore other beautiful places underwater!

I love the newer Go-Pro’s and the 7 is definitely much better than the old ones.
I still recommend trying to upgrade the camera to a larger one

Thanx
Hope to meet underwater someday

Hi @JoniG … Thank you for sharing it… I am using G15 and FantaSea housing as well as Hero Black GoPro 8. Before that I used GoPro 5 silver, which I lost it accidentally in one of my diving trips hehehe. And you are a dive master! I am still an amateur but I do share the love of diving as well. I use LR as well and even with all the filters you can think of, the WB is always be the home work. Cheers from Indonesia…
