How do we add a caption to an image loaded from Google Photos?

To avoid hitting the 1000 image limit here on Connect, I have made it a habit to store my images in a public Google Photo album and then use the HTML hack to display such images. But I never figured out how to add a caption to such photos.

Please help me!

I’m looking for a solution where I don’t need to edit the raw HTML code.

Cheers

Hello @MortenCopenhagen

This is amazing that you could be asking for help as well.

If you don’t know it,who would? Well perhaps ErmesT or some of the GM might jump in to help you. Tushar or Naresh might have a solution for you as well if they see your post.

As you know,I’m not very IT minded compared to others of my ranks here on connect. Wish you good luck and appropriate answer to your question.

Good question, @MortenCopenhagen

However, as the Alt text (AKA Caption) is part of the set of metadata of an image, actually there is not a way to import and display them in Connect.

This can be considered an issue, because it reduce the accessibility of Connect, and it is one of the reason why, long time ago, as you and @SholaIB may remember, I was asking for a Tool for embedding photos from other Google products , without the need to write something in HTML.

As far as I know actually you can only add your Caption under the photo.

I am making a test with a photo where I added the description in Google Photos. You may be able to see the description here, I guess: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Sa7AymmuxrkQy4C7A

Caption: Hot sandwich with pepperoni, zucchini and cheese

Brilliant, @ErmesT

I see your caption from Google Photos.

I guess the caption needs to be in place before inserting it.

Did you insert the image manually with HTML coding or just copy-pasting it?

Cheers and thanks

Morten

Nope, @MortenCopenhagen , wait before to be happy

The Caption text that you see in my previous reply has been typed IN THE POST under the photo, so in fact it is not a caption.

I added the photo using the HTML code, because pasting the photo doesn’t work well for me.

Sorry about that

@ErmesT

I thought that could be the case, but hesitated to ask :joy:

And I guess pasting will upload it to Connect and steal a seat on the 1000 bus.

Thanks anyhow.

In the past the easiest way to embed a photo was that one, @MortenCopenhagen : copy a photo from your Google Photos and paste it in the editor. The HTML code was generated automatically. But this seems not to be the right procedure anymore :worried:

I was one of the first to reach the limit in Connect, mostly due to the several screenshots posted, and a few weeks later I was invited to be a Connect Moderator.

Maybe this is a sign… Who knows :grinning:

Thank you @ErmesT

You saved the day. If you don’t know then no one knows :sweat_smile: :sweat_smile: :sweat_smile: . Thank you to everyone of you for your activities on connect and on the maps

Glad you got a good answer @MortenCopenhagen

@ErmesT

The Connect editor also started stripping H1, H2, and H3 tags making it very difficult to format longer posts nicely. @JeroenM reported this privately earlier today.

@SholaIB I’m afraid we did not find a usable solution.

Proabably, the easiest will be to fake a caption pretty much like what Ermes just demonstrated.

Thanks for mentioning this here @MortenCopenhagen .
If I open the editor, the H1, H2, H3 tags are still in the HTML. However, on the front end (what the readers get to see) they are not enforced…

Unfortunately, I don`t have the time right now to investigate further…

@JeroenM

So the verb “ignoring” is more accurate than “stripping”. Thanks.

Follow up: In that case the design could easily be managed via CSS. If correct, this means a fix could be implemented super easily.

Oooops ! Sorry @MortenCopenhagen

I have just read all the replies now and realised that.

Maybe a GM might pay attention and say or do something. You never know,fingers crossed.

Well I still have enough space for photos and besides I might decide to start editing past post as it is when and where necessary. In that way I’ll avoid the 1000 space problem.
