How do I move a map marker?

Can someone tell me the exact way to move a map marker? I want to move my new address map marker a couple feet. Here is what I do.

  • Search the address and click the marker

  • Click on Report a problem (On Computer)

  • Click on Wrong Address, The Fix address window opens

  • Move the marker. I am not changing any of the address information.

  • Set the reason as Fix the Pin position.

But it always appear as a place creation and not a map marker. Earlier I was able to just move the marker, and the edits show as a map marker and was instantly approved. So I do I just move a pin without it doing a place creation?

@Nigol Hi!

A warm welcome to the Local Guides Connect Community!

Could you please tell me which type of location this is? Is it any business or POI or postal address?

You can share the location link here to clarify.

However, if it is not a postal address only you can change the marker easily using Suggest an edit option.

Waiting for your response.

It is a postal address, I won’t share the link since it’s my home address. But can you tell me which options EXACTLY I need to do to move a marker, every time I try it it always does a Place Creation.

Hello @Nigol

You can accomplish that quickly on an Android phone.

Click on the hamburger menu (three lines at top left) and then select settings.
Next, in the settings menu, select Edit home or work.

If you have set up the home address previously, it will indicate the home icon. (If not, the app will allow you to select a new one). Click three dots next to that, and select Edit home. .
The map will load. Drag to adjust your home location and select the exact point on the map and then save. Enlarging the map improves precision.

The app will invite some further questions on how to commute. You can skip those.

Hi @Nigol , Your personal address is not public, so you cannot edit it on Google Maps. Personal places are used across Google products for personalized recommendations. It was created automatically using your geolocation and it’s visible just for you. Instead of report it as a “wrong adress”, I suggest you do access Google Maps App in your smartphone, click on the 3 dots on the icon “Home”, then “Edit Home”, and “Setup Home Adress”. You should be able to move the maps marker to the correct address without create a new place.

I am not talking about my Home location or personal place. The City where I live recently renamed the portion of the street where we live in, because it was hard to find. This means new address number, street name, Postal Code etc. Without any input it would approximate the address to down the street with the wrong Postal Code. So I created a new address with the good postal code, but it put the marker in the back yard and would point to the wrong house on the wrong street. So I changed the map marker location (Which I can’t seem to figure how to do it again). Since the marker I put is a couple of feet off, delivery men would stop a few feet short, so I am trying to update it again.

When clicking the address I have a report a problem (Suggest an edit seems to only appear on Android). Then I have a couple of choice, The first one is Wrong Address and it says Fix details about this address or it’s where it appears on the map. This is the options I used to try to move the marker, but in the edits windows it shows it has a place creation and not a Map Marker, like I want.

There is also a Wrong Information options and then when I try to click the address Pin, it opens the same Fix Address window.

So How to you get to move the map marker PUBLICLY (So delivery can get to the right place) and not have it try to create a new place. I did it earlier and it was approved instantly. All Help info says to just click on Suggest an edit, and stops there. After I click Suggest an edit or report a problem what is the exact way to JUST move a marker?

I also tried to delete the old address and it also says Place creation even if I said the reason is that address should be deleted.

Hello @Nigol

The right option would be through the send feedback menu. Please submit the details of old address number, street name, Postal Code etc. and the new ones corresponding to that.
Along with that, please add supporting documents. (Notification from the local authority, newspaper publication, etc.)

If the changes are over a larger scale, you can post the details here & tag a moderator for help.
However, if the scope is limited, that option will not be suitable for privacy reasons as you have rightly stated in earlier response.

It only affects 6 house and 2 others have already successfully done their changes and I also added the address for my neighbor, thinking of doing the rests if I can figure it out.

You mentioned that the right options is through the Send Feedback menu, but this is all I have. It’s either Wrong Address or Wrong Information, but like I said earlier both go back to the same Fix address menu. In that menu is the reason what determines if it’s a place creation or a map marker? I keep using Fix the pin location. Or do I have a missing option, or a bug since the pin seems to be close to the road? I would share privately with a moderator if it would help fix this.

Actually @Nigol the pin location for my home address is also marked in a slightly wrong position, so I just tried to move it using that ‘Fix the pin location’ option and indeed in my list of edits it now shows up as a pending edit for ‘Place added’. I was also shown the ‘+ 15 points’ screen when submitting the edit.

This might be a bug, so I’m tagging a Google Moderator to have a look @DeniGu

Hello @Nigol ,

Thank you for reaching out.

Please go to the Google Maps Help Forum where you should be able to find the information you seek.

@JanVanHaver , currently there is no bug that we are aware of but we will keep an eye if anything comes up.

Thank you for answering, but like I said earlier in the thread, the link does not help at all. It does not go into detail on how to move a map marker, it only says to click on suggest an edit, but nothing after that. This why I am asking here where knowledgeable users can answer me on the exact way to move a map marker. If even a Moderator @JanVanHaver can’t move a map marker, then there must be a problem or the option to do so isn’t clear at all.

If there is no bugs, then what are the exact steps (beyond clicking suggest an edit) to move a map marker? I can’t believe that no one knows or has moved a map marker before.

FYI @Nigol my pending edit is now approved and the map marker is moved. This might be a case of ‘wrong message shown’ in the notification rather than wrong process.

@JanVanHaver Then can you tell me if you chose the option wrong address? And the reason, because my edits have been approved for a couple of days but nothing has changed. Even the address of my neighbor isn’t live yet.

I selected the ‘Home’ icon to open the details page, then Suggest an edit and then indeed Wrong address @Nigol

@JanVanHaver There must be something wrong with my account, because all of the changes I did, none of the approved ones were reflected on the map. Not just the map marker move, but adding my neighbor address also didn’t work. Could it be some kind of SPAM protection, because either me, or my neighbors tried do a lot of changes. If it is, is their a way around it? Use another account, maybe? Because there are still 3 house whose address don’t exists? And they are kind of SOL, because nowadays a lot of app/company use Google Maps as their backend. I couldn’t even call a Uber without adding my address to Google Maps.

Very annoying indeed, as you said especially for things like deliveries or Uber.

Have you tried the ‘Your opinion about Maps’ option under ‘Send feedback’ ? That opens a kind of free text field where you can describe the problem.

And then there is always the support of the Google Maps community you could try.
