How can I change my name that’s visible above my google maps reviews? At the moment it’s my full name because it’s linked with my gmail adress that I use for google play and gmail and I think it requires me to have full name added instead of just a nickname.

Go to https://myaccount.google.com/ and click on “personal information”
From there you can change the name displayed, and also protect your privacy
You can indeed display a nickname, respecting the account rules

You have to reach to the link https://myaccount.google.com/personal-info & then click on the “name” option there. That will take you to to next page which displays two boxes “First name” and “Last name”. We get confused here & are tempted to add our actual names. However, the account policies allow us to put there whatever we wish, provided, we follow the guidelines as explained at this link.

Further, a name change here reflects not only in Maps but also in all other Google services viz. Gmail, YouTube, Google Photos etc.

Okay so when you’re on this page or overlooking any comment you simply click on your photo that shows the message or notifications and so on you scroll down after you click on your photo and it will display change username

I know about this, but this doesn’t let me set my nickname only on display. The options are either full name, full name with a nickname in the middle or full name with a nickname at the end. There’s no option for nickname only and this is what I would like to have.
Yes, but as you mentioned - if I write anything else in the Name option it will also change the name in all other services and I don’t want that. I want to have full name in Gmail, but I want to a nickname displayed on google map comments/reviews.
I haven’t solved the problem 
It still exists.
Changing username here will only change it in Local Guides Connect - it won’t affect the name in google maps.
And clicking photo on google maps doesn’t lead me to changing the name, and as I mentioned earlier - I can’t set nickname only in settings.

The name used on Google Maps is the one you use for your Google Account, you can set there the name you want across the Google services, such as Maps. To have 2 different names on Gmail and on Maps, you can then follow these instructions to Change the name on your Gmail account.
