Holy Mountain or Garden of Virgin Mary

The Holy Mountain of Athos is an autonomous and self-governed territory of Greece.

It occupies the whole of the third peninsula of Halkidiki Greece, about 50 km in length and having a width of

8-12km covering an area of 330 square kilometers. Although connected with the mainland, visitors can enter the peninsula only by see, either by a ferry or a more expensive water taxi.

A UNESCO world heritage site (both cultural and natural) since 1988 only allowed to be visited by men. A Special permit with maximum stay of 4 days and an entrance fee is required for limited people daily in order to visit the holy mountain. Arrange your visit in advance and inform the monasteries about your visit in order to keep a bed for you.

Solely inhabited by monks, Monastery life exists in the Holly mountain from the 9th century and the first monastery the one of Megistis Lavras was established in 963. Nowadays 20 Monasteries and around 15 Skites (small monasteries) exist.

Morphologically, the Peninsula of Athos is distinguished from the steep slopes along the shores, the strong folding and the presence of Mount Athos, which rises sharply like a pyramid, reaching the height of 2033 meters. The geographical isolation of the area has contributed to preserving the primordial diversity of flora, fauna and vegetation. Personally I have never found a place in Europe with such dense forests. It reminded me of forests in tropical countries.

While visiting the Holy mountain you can overnight in one of the numerous Monasteries or Skites. During my stay there I stayed in 2 monasteries and one Skiti where only 2 monks are living. In total I managed to visit 6 monasteries and 2 skites and I was overwhelmed by the architecture of the buildings and the treasures that each Monastery possesses like a Holy Gospel of 1059.

At the time of your stay in the Holy mountain you will have the opportunity to meet really spiritual people that worth having a chat with and talk around many issues and listen how they approach life and what is their beliefs about life after death.

The tranquility of the place is unprecedented and offers to the visitor a peace of mind and soul.

A truly once in a lifetime experience
