Holiday is freedom - nothing less, but much more….

Right after Christmas to the beginning of January I did visit Great Britain (the main Island of UK) with my daughter. In fact without any plan any hotel or ferry booking but only some „random“ emails with some Local Guides:

From Germany on the way to the ferry we did stop over in Bruxelles https://goo.gl/maps/xjSBFdZ4dqksAiC66, Gent https://goo.gl/maps/VFZwPePJ27zVrokc8 and Brugge https://goo.gl/maps/UTAU4qPp4jdm8etW7. In fact due to @JanVanHaver and his Meetup I have finally 2019 discovered Belgium like a very interesting travel destination. Here you find so many links to European history and culture and a very high standard of hospitility. So one night we where „must“ to stay in Brugge, as in the cities we took like a stop over was to much to observe.

London

Belgium

On the way to the ferry I booked on the way there via my smartphone, we shortly did visit Dunkerque https://goo.gl/maps/2AoTw8wJh43DnnzZ7 , because I believe that it is important, that my children have a link to European history and that they are aware, that the time of piece we live in, is no self – evidence.

Fish and Chips dinner on the ferry and than a drive to Cambridge https://goo.gl/maps/h6WhP9LXwfgZbJASA and during the night a trip to York https://g.page/york-castle-museum?share. Well it was not fully what I did expect, but we missed a hotel check in and my petrol tank was full……

After we did some hours sleeping in the car, we met the first Locals and I was attonished how friendly all people where to us. It was from start to end, that all people in the UK where really outstanding friendly to us.

We did visit as well:

Edinburgh https://goo.gl/maps/YePeAqZPDNbcjCe39

On the way to Scotland

Jedburgh https://goo.gl/maps/sAG6cwkJrBdFT75r7

Glasgow https://goo.gl/maps/YSq3hcVPK7xYNtsp7

Lancaster https://goo.gl/maps/18hFLVUxbw2kcA1H7

Manchaster https://goo.gl/maps/GLaQ9ZgpJMw8iXhX6

And the big surprise and very beautiful Liverpool !!! https://goo.gl/maps/HBHS4L8HqMuGogW79

Five days where done, about 6.000 photos (where maybe in the end 3500 will be on GoogleMaps) where taken AND around 2.500 km has been past….

And now in fact it did start…… As we spend two nights at Nuneaton https://goo.gl/maps/ZSoFuhDheczwkxyW9 in the home of @TheRealKristin . I was so surprised about the nice hospitality of our community. Together we did visit Birmingham https://goo.gl/maps/9vC9yPzkA3Z1TksSA and Coventry https://goo.gl/maps/kFuWvfVfx7VTcgVQ6 and it was a big fun, as I could take a lot of photos and my daughter was shopping with @therealkristin …. On the other hand we did as well visit the bombed church of Coventry https://goo.gl/maps/8F3sr8bX4GJddVrt8 and learned about the terrible history the town has survived during the Second World War.

We have had a lot of fun and a great Scones Party!!! Thank you so much for the funny time @TheRealKristin

After this two great days we drove via Oxford https://goo.gl/maps/3FZrjazqJ8R6C9uk8 to London https://goo.gl/maps/ovRZZSzLFAiMPpYm7 , did spend there time with sightseeing, New Years firework, New Years Parade, Winter Wonderland and in several shopping malls. Then we decided to go home to Germany, but the ferries where booked…. So, no other joys than to go to Stonehenge https://goo.gl/maps/1Ptf5ngwbGZqSsjN7 . Not exactly on the way, but who cares and in the afternoon we have had a fantastic meeting in the craft beer bars with @IrenaS @@and @FazZ @@ I did met first time on tnd European Meetup in Gent.

Next day Canterbury https://goo.gl/maps/xC4bG3LkKCFJyDfF6 and in the afternoon Sandwich https://goo.gl/maps/CaZ92uyoMxYdwHcy6 where I met a long year friend first time after several years. Right after midnight we did took the ferry and not sure how, I slept maybe one hour on the ferry and 2 hours on a parking on the highway, while my daughter did sleep the whole way back…. In fact I haven’t figured it out how my body was able to do this, but after every holiday I feel many years younger

Learnings:

  • Do visit Belgium at least once in your life!
  • When visiting the UK ensure to buy a heritage pass https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/overseas-visitors/ . It will be much more cheaper.
  • The people in UK are really totally friendly. Real Gentelmans! Enjoy this!
  • We have been there in winter and it did rain from time to time, but who cares. The landscape is breathtaking.

AND – The LG community is great!!!

Hey @TorM ,

I am amazed how many places you managed to visit in such a time! It really turns out that the best trips are these that are actually not that planned! What more than a greater surprise than to end up visiting the Stonehenge!

Personally I’ve never visited any of the places you mentioned and I am dreaming of going there. I would add them to my bucket list. : )

I know that @PoliMC has been in Belgium before? Have you seen some of the mentioned places there?

Hi @TsekoV ,

Thanks for tagging me!

Yeah, I visited exactly those three cities in Belgium - Brussels, Ghent and Bruges. I can say that my favourite is Bruges because of the canals there it’s really very beautiful and the atmosphere is just different. Unfortunately, I don’t have photos by me now to show you.

I’ve visited also Antwerp and Ostend, where I saw North Sea for the first time but it was very cold. The best and the most delicious fish that I’ve eaten was exactly in Ostend.

@TorM I think you had amazing trip with your daughter and I am also amazed how many places could you visit and didn’t have even reservations. I think, those trips without such plans, are the best ones!

I am curious which city in Belgium did you like the most?

I wish you to have many more such trips!

Thank you @TsekoV and @PoliMC for the feedback.

It is difficult for me to select the most beautiful town… All towns have there charm.

But in fact visiting a town as a tourist, I see somehow from a technical point of view.

What is much more important is the emotions I get there… I mean, I have already visited not so nice towns (architecture, hotel offers), but found somewhere a special emotion.

So: I really love Gent, because it is beautiful AND I met there last year many great Local Guides like @IrenaS or @JaneBurunina or @helga19 …and all others!!!

Hey @TorM - I’m so happy you had such a wonderful trip with your daughter! It was such a joy to host you both on your journey, and also to be able to show you around my areas where I live.

My husband and I enjoyed your shared company, and we learned so much about the culture from where you live with many interesting facts

I am also grateful again for the time you spent taking so many pictures with me around the city centre that I can add to Google Maps. Oh, and let your daughter know I still enjoy using my Mickey backpack :slightly_smiling_face: I’m sure she will remember that trip you both took for the rest of her life! If you both head to Disneyland any time in the future and want another guest, I will go too  Oh… and any Hello Kitty Cafes too

@PoliMC - Brugges is my favourite also. I’ve been there 3 times now and always find it such a charming city.

Hello @TheRealKristin

Yes, Disneyland is for sure something we should once plan again.

My daughter carries of course the Micky Mouse backpack…

I really did enjoy the time with all of you! For me a special moment was in fact, when we US and German citizens did together visit the Church of Coventry as a memorial against war.

I still have not uploaded all pictures from this trip…

Hi @TorM ,

Yeah, I agree with you that every town has its charm and the most important thing are the memories that are left in us from there.

I am waiting for more pictures from the trip! :slightly_smiling_face:

@TheRealKristin I visited Bruges two times and always when I go there I am feeling great. It’s the same as I was in Dresden, Germany. There are just cities which will always stay on your heart.

Hi @TorM ,

I’m sure you will enjoy visiting all these cities! I’ve been to Thessaloniki, Ohrid, and of course Tirana. If you need more bits of advice, you can always ask me.

When you visit the Ohrid lake, and if you like fish dishes, I would suggest a restaurant to try the unique fish that live only in this lake.

About Thessaloniki, I’m sure @VasT has some nice places to recommend.

I will be so eager to read your post after this trip! I hope you have lots of fun and enjoy some delicious food.
