Histria: the rediscovered Greek city

Photo 1: Greek columns in Histria

During the trip with @mariacristinafossa to the Danube delta, we could not, on the way back, fail to visit the rediscovered city of Histria.

Founded by the Greeks in 630 BC on a peninsula within a protected bay of the Black Sea, it represents the oldest and most important Greek settlement in Romania. Greek merchants arrived in its port and then left to trade in the interior of Romania and as proof of this, Greek vases and amphorae were found in various parts of the country. Even the oldest coin found in Romania dates back to 480 BC, Greek and found in Histria.

Histria then became a Roman colony in 30 AD. and later Byzantine, until its end, due to the sediments of the Danube that closed the bay, preventing any access to the sea for ships. In fact, today the remains are found on the banks of a large lake. Deprived of access to the sea, Histria lost its importance and was subjected to invasions by the barbarian peoples and destruction. He also lost his name and his memory.

Only at the end of the 19th century it was found and the excavations still continue.

The modern museum inside the site is interesting. Here too I was able to appreciate the Greek manufacturing which, like in Paestum, fascinated me much more than the Roman one.

It remained only to reach the beach of Constance and to be able to say we have touched the Black Sea!

Hi @plavarda !

Thank you for this testimony of ancient Romans in Histria!
How I would like to find an ancient gold coin … but then I doubt I could keep it!

“Photo 6: Histria museum, an amphora, at left!” I love your typical Italian sense of humor!

Bye,

David
