Historical St Francis Church, Fort Kochi

Hello LG friends,

I would like to share a historical monument that I visited a few years ago in Fort Kochi, Kerala, India.

St. Francis CSI Church, one of India’s oldest churches According to historical records, the Portuguese constructed it in 1503 by Franciscan Friars.

It is located in Fort Kochi, not too far from the beach there. The closest train station is Ernakulam Junction (south), 13 km (approximately 8 miles), and the closest airport is Cochin International Airport, 36 km (approximately 22 miles). To get there on Parade Road, you can take rikshaws or taxis.

Photo 01 - War memorial at the entrance. Sign board at the gate indicates details of the church timings.

Photo 02 - At the church’s entrance, signs and notices direct visitors and give them crucial information in advance.

Photo 03 - Glimpses of the historically significant European colonial architecture. It is evident that the structure was initially built of wood, which was later covered and supported by stone walling.

The church’s architecture is in the typical European colonial style. It has been declared a “protected monument" by the government of India, considering its importance under the ancient and archeological sites law of India.

Photo 04 - Important monuments and exquisitely crafted wooden furniture are both in excellent condition.

Following the Portuguese, the Dutch looked after it, and then the British. It has witnessed many colonial changes during the early years.

The most interesting part is that Vasco da Gama’s tomb is located within the building. According to what they said, he was first buried there before being transported to Portugal. But the structure is still available to see.

Photo 05 - The board lists the people who have administered the church from its founding until its current state. The tomb of Vasco da Gama is on the right.

Photo 06 - To help visitors locate nearby notable attractions and their accessibility, the local government has installed a number of these notice boards.

Within Fort Kochi itself, there are numerous historical monuments of this type. A nearby example is Santa Cruz Cathedral Baselica. It is almost as old as St. Francis CSI Church.

Photo 07 - Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica from outside. The board at the gate clearly indicates its foundation year.

Some of the nearest attractions:

Fort Kochi Beach

Looks like a nice silent place to visit.

I traveled to Kochi couple of times but was not aware that so many interesting places were available to visit.

I especially liked the photos of the timings, notice and history of the place.

Let me be frank with you, my dear @AjitThite Ji… I have heard about this many a times… also, I have a family friend’s house in Fort Kochi (where I have stayed too), still, I couldn’t visit this church/basilica…

Interesting photos and informative narration.

Mattanchery Palace is another destination which I didn’t know… thanks for this wonderful post…

Yes, wooden furnitures are classic in Kerala.

Information about Vasco da Gama is also interesting.

How much time is needed to cover this fully?

Regards with greetings…

Indeed, @TusharSuradkar , it is a really serene and quiet place. Even though there was a rush when we were there, everyone remained silent because of the ambiance within.

Fort Kochi is a beautiful place itself; its traces of Portuguese architecture will make you instantly recall Goa (minus beaches :grinning: ).

Thanks for your appreciation.

Thanks for your appreciation, @Annaelisa !

Making collages was a better presentation option because the majority of the photographs were in portrait orientation.

It’s fine, @TravellerG sir! I am happy that you liked my post. The churches are more on the coastal side of it I think.

I was staying with my family at INS Dronacharya, which is located directly on the coast and quite close to these spots. The Indian Naval Maritime Museum is within its premises.

I heard a lot about the fort, so I added it here. It will take around three to four hours to explore that area. Count some extra time for photography, food, etc.

The wooden furniture there was awesome wherever I visited. Just loved it. There is a lot to explore and planning for it again. Let’s see.

Cheers!

@AjitThite What an enchanting glimpse into the historic St. Francis CSI Church in Fort Kochi! It’s fascinating to learn about the church’s journey through different colonial eras - from Portuguese to Dutch, then British.

The fact that Vasco da Gama was initially buried there adds a layer of intrigue and historical significance to the church. It’s amazing to think about the historical figures who have walked those grounds. I appreciate the practical details you’ve shared about reaching the church and the mention of nearby attractions like Fort Kochi Beach and the Indian Naval Maritime Museum. These seem like perfect additions to any travel itinerary.

Sorry for the photo & post on this visit, Dada @AjitThite  but I would like to tell you that on the seven to eight kilometer road from Valley Tourist Lake to St. Andrews Beach, there can be four to five churches whose structure is worth seeing. The beauty of the Arabian Sea behind the road and the huge coconut trees along the shore and the rustling of the leaves of the coconut trees along with the waves of the sea mesmerize you.
