Historic Old Cemetery For Example of Possible Future Meet-Up Photo Walk Idea

Greetings, Fellow Local Guides!

Just sharing an album I had put together for my younger son, who, on his 18th birthday asked me (his suggestion caught me off guard, for sure!) to take the family to a nearly 200-year-old historic cemetery an hour away. He has always has an affinity toward old things and antiques, so this was not a far reach from his hobby of collecting antiques from a young age.

Well, I thought I’d share these images. Perhaps a Local Guides Meet-Up Photo Walk could be done here in the future?

We showed respect for the area and held in reverence those who have we have lost. We watched where we stepped and even tidied up areas needing attention. Micanopy Historic Cemetery, is resting beneath spreading live oaks draped in Spanish moss in Micanopy, Florida, which was founded in 1826. It is very moving experience. You’ll find headstones of entire families who, nearly 200 years ago, were lost to disease, as well as infants who never lived beyond a week.

One of the most unusual pieces of statuary, a tall, beautifully sculpted angel, is a marker for Annie Gertrude Barr, daughter of John and C.D. Barr, who lived from 1871 to 1891. Perhaps, she was a young mother in the late 1800s who succumbed during an epidemic of Yellow Fever. One particularly tragic event occurred in 1873, when a group of six teenagers took a boat out on Lake Orange during a picnic. Their boat capsized and all of the teens drowned. The grieving families buried all the youngsters in the cemetery.
