The Christmas events have used approximately 400,000 LED lights to illuminate the entire Hibiya area, including Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, Hibiya Nakadori Street, and nearby buildings.
Recent illuminations have focused less on the total number of bulbs and more on thematic elements, such as, Large Main Trees, Featuring an 8-meter-tall tree decorated with full-color lights, often tied to a specific theme like a Disney movie.
Color-Changing Displays, Utilizing sophisticated lighting that shifts through different color palettes (e.g., “Blue Moment,” “Sunset Gold”) throughout the season to create different moods.
A Symphony of Light and Sound
The overall theme for this year’s illumination is “Music,” which is beautifully reflected in the changing moods of the light displays. The event is split into two distinct parts:
Part 1, Hot Jazz (Nov 13 - Dec 25), The first half of the season features vibrant, energetic colors inspired by the lively rhythms of hot jazz, creating a festive and dynamic ambiance perfect for the Christmas lead-up.
Part 2, Nocturne (Dec 26 - Feb 28): Following Christmas, the lights shift to a calmer, more serene palette inspired by peaceful nocturnes, offering a tranquil and romantic setting for the New Year and Valentine’s period.
The illumination is spread across several key areas within and around the Tokyo Midtown Hibiya complex.
HIBIYA Magic Time SQUARE (Hibiya Step Plaza) The main plaza is the centerpiece of the event. For the Christmas season until December 25th, it features a spectacular 8-meter-tall main tree inspired by the world of Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia 2.” This massive tree is adorned with full-color lights and surrounded by illuminated cubes, with special light and sound performances taking place every 30 minutes, creating an immersive experience.
Another highlight in the plaza is the “Eternal Heart Tree,” a beautiful Katsura tree decorated with sparkling silvery-white lights and a single, symbolic red heart ornament. This special tree will be on display until February 15, 2026.
Hibiya Area Illuminations (Hibiya Nakadori Street) The streets surrounding Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, particularly Hibiya Nakadori, are lined with trees draped in sophisticated full-color and champagne-gold lights. The color schemes change periodically throughout the event, with themes like “Blue Moment,” “Aurora Green,” “Sunset Gold,” and “Pink Venus Belt,” ensuring a fresh look upon repeat visits. The colors are chosen to complement the winter night sky, creating a magical urban landscape.
Godzilla Square
Park View Winter Garden (6th Floor) For a more relaxing experience away from the street-level bustle, head up to the 6th-floor Park View Garden. This open-air terrace offers stunning views of the city and Hibiya Park. During the illumination, the lawn area glows with colorful lights while surrounding plants are gently lit in soft white, creating a tranquil and romantic garden in the sky, complete with ambient background music.
Christmas Marche Adding to the festive spirit, Tokyo Midtown Hibiya will host a Christmas Marche for the first time. Visitors can browse stalls offering a variety of handmade Christmas items, such as wreaths, unique ornaments, and delicious seasonal sweets, making it the perfect place to find a special gift.
Whether you’re looking for a festive family outing, or simply a beautiful place to enjoy the winter evening, the Hibiya Magic Time Illumination offers an unforgettable experience that perfectly captures the magic of the season in Tokyo. Had the experience of sparkling and enchanting environment.
