Before to start, read Local Guides Program Policy
Also you can read Community Policy
And Getting Started
I know it’s quiet boring 
Now as contributor you can participate to share with Local Guides ideas, suggestions, photos and many other usefull things for community.
You can also ask for help if you have questions.
As you observe there are many forums or sections on Connect.
Choose appropriate one to contribute. (Read YanniY post on how to contribute)
You want to share photos go on "Share Your Photos & Discoveries" forum, for example.
On Connect you’ll deal with different contributors:
- Local Guides
Local Guides and Connect moderators are all volonteers; Google Moderators are employees.
Ther’re many other things and tips to learn but don’t want to flood your brain !
Do not hesitate to ask LG’s if any problem
